Re: new central a/c unit and furnace

I'd like to know what the OP means by "the compressor in my a/c is on the way out." If the system is struggling "to keep the house at 75 on a really hot day", that doesn't necessarily mean the compressor is on the way out. It could very well mean his system is doing all it can do under the conditions. Replacing just the compressor most likely will not magically cause the system to perform better than it is capable of performing. If the furnace is 28 years old, is the A/C the same age?

My other question is if the OP knows "someone that will install it that does it professionally" why can't the professional answer his questions and why can't the professional determine if it is in the OP's best interest to just replace the compressor (if it actually is on the way out) or to replace the entire system? I'd trust a professional's opinion more than I would the opinions of a home improvement forum, especially since we know absolutely nothing about the existing system or the logistics of installing a new system.

Just about exactly what I was going to type in.

Yes, the old refigerant is still easily available and is probably your problem, other than a cleaning and what not.

i had it looked at by 2 different pros. i had the system cleaned and it improved but still failed to cool the house in the same fashion it had before. and all the noise that it is now making is coming from the compressor. as far as replacing the compressor i was told by the 2 pros that looked at it that none of there sources have anymore r22 compressor to fit mine.

Sandshark is right. In my experience compressors are either working, or they are not. When they go, they go all the way.

Your A/C may be running constantly but not cooling the place down due to other factors.... Duct issues..... Poor insulation and or drafts, etc etc

I think she'll go eventually. Course you've gotten a lot of use out of it so replacement is up to you.

it used to be able to cool the house the way i wanted it to. now it can not. i had it inspected by a 2 pros. both came to the same conclusion. it has also been serviced regularly. the second pro even pulled out the r22, cleaned the lines, and flushed the a-coil. it does not cool like it used to be able to. nothing has changed. in fact i actually put more insulation in the basement on the re-model. i insulated where my floor joists meet the foundation with r19 bat. it had none before. i was told 20% of your engery loss is there. but yet the cooling effeciency got worse. that is how i know it is going out. i was wanting find out wich of the brands will last me the longest and if a 2 stage system will actually pay for itself.

This has also been a much hotter summer than recent years so that is affecting it

It might seem like we're giving you a hard time. For the sake of argument, let's assume your compressor is on its way out. Now, you want to know which brands will last longest and if a 2-stage system will pay for itself.

Brands are pretty much insignificant these days. Thirty years ago, going with a particular brand might have mattered. Now days, not so much. The most critical aspects of a new system are that it is sized properly and that it is installed properly, along with being maintained.

I recommend you talk to your friends, family and neighbors. Get recommendations from them regarding HVAC contractors they use and trust. Once you've got a list of contractors (at least three), call them and ask them to come to your home and give you options on systems you might consider and what it's going to cost you. Then, you can ask questions and have any concerns addressed at that time.
