After three coats of poly
I don't know about using sand paper each time. When I redid my 130 year old hardwoods I used the steel wool pad on the buffer between the three coats of poly. We did not buff the final coat becasue we wanted the gloss. Has lasted 6 years so far and looks as good as it did the day we finished.
