 | Getting rid of bugs in a computer (the real kind) I hope I posted this in the right place, because this condition is somewhat bizarre. I'm fixing a computer for a friend, with some help from the wonderful people in the Security Cleanup forum, and apparently there's another problem with it that no one realized. I've been starting to see a lot of cockroaches and other bugs down the finished basement where I keep my computers. I never had a problem with bugs before, except for the one year we had bees in our house. We had a bit of a mouse problem at one time, but with six cats in the house, that didn't last. I realize now that the bug problem started a couple days after I brought my friend's computer home to work on. I'm all but certain they're inside the computer.
I wanted to open it up anyway to blow out any dust, but if there are bugs inside it, what's the safest way to kill and get rid of them? I'm sure it's not good for the computer to empty a whole can of Raid inside the thing, as much as I want to.
I have a contract with an exterminator (had it ever since the bee problem), and they're coming over this weekend to spray. They were scheduled to come out for routine spraying anyway, I just moved the appointment up. My plan is to get the computer cleaned up and back to the owners before that. |

If you feel like a project, duct tape some rubber gloves in holes and work on it that way while it is sealed... |

 | reply to TheWickerMan Seal it up inside a garbage bag and stick it in your freezer for a few days. Then open it up and dump out the contents. |

 | reply to TheWickerMan First off, spread some boric acid powder around your basement. This will kill any roaches that have moved into your house, because like it or not, you now have a cockroach problem. As for the computer, double bag it and spray a good roach killer in it and leave it closed for a couple of days. I volunteered to fix a stereo amp once for a friend and as I was carrying it to the house, several roaches came out of it. There were roaches in my car after that just from the ride over. Acting quickly is imperative as those buggers can reproduce quickly! |

I'd _highly_ recommend foggers... the kind that you put in water. You would need to keep the cats away or outside when this is done. The foggers are a little expensive but they _will_ work! The fog is better then the spray as the spray just mists and coats everything. The bug then need to walk across this to be poisoned. In the meantime, you coated everything with the poison. The fog gets into _every_ nook and cranny but then goes away. Put one next to the computer. Once done you will see roaches come out and die on the floor. The smoke they let off won't harm the computer. |

Open the case. Take a garden leaf blower and aim it the open case. Turn it on and walk away. If it's one of those 235mph you would have to hold it and blast them out. Don't forget to wear protected eye gear and a dust mask for your mouth and nose.
Computers can handle this much wind power. I do it all them time on users who smoke too much and the brown ash from the smokes is just too much to clean by hand blower. Need to take out the big stuff to do it. Never want to spray anything into the computer parts. Only a can of dust remover can be used. |

 | reply to TheWickerMan Well, this is interesting. I opened it up to get information on a piece of hardware inside, and saw only one bug inside the thing. So maybe it didn't come from the computer after all. Then again, they could be hiding in the power supply or something.
Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll go with bagging and spraying option. There's an unfinished part of my basement, which is basically a laundry and storage area, where I can keep it. I have a garage, but we're in the middle of a heatwave, and it's been unbearably hot in there. I'd be worried about the heat damaging the computer.
I have an exterminator coming tomorrow, so that should take care of the problem. I have a contract with them, and they were due to come by in a couple weeks anyway, so it's not going to cost me anything, other than what I'm already paying them for the contract.
Fogging the house wouldn't be practical, because where I live, we're actually not allowed to let our pets outside, and with the heat wave, I wouldn't want to anyway. |
