Re: [ps3] Red Light of Death

I got the R/YLOD this afternoon on my 60gb. After reading what Sony want to repair it, I figure I will give it a go myself - I mean, it's already broken and out of warranty so I don't really have anything to lose besides a few bucks for thermal paste. I haven't used the backwards compatibility once in the 3 years I've owned it so I figure I wont in the future either.

My plan is to pray that the reflow works good enough to turn it on so I can retrive my MW2 disk, then take it to Gamestop and trade it for a slim. They are offering $200 on any PS3 system trade until Sunday, so I'll basically pay $100 + tax for a new, more reliable system with a bigger HDD vs. $150+ for a refurb with all my data being wiped anyway.
Gamestop wont take PS3s that have been opened up. I tried yesterday. Since the sticker was gone he said they would not accept it.

On the plus side the reflow worked fine..but for how long?

There's a way to get to the cover screw without fully removing or damaging the warranty sticker. Heat it up with a hairdryer on medium heat for about 30 seconds, then use the end/edge of a very thin utility knife to pry the rubber foot out slightly from under the sticker. This exposes the bottom of the sticker on either side of the foot. Then VERY gently use the knife again to lift the sticker enough to remove the foot and access the screw (you should only have to peel it back about half-way). Stick it back once you have the screw out while you're working on it, but leave the rubber foot out to make it easier to peel it back again for reassembly.

I did this earlier and it looks like it was never removed. The sticker is in one peice and the corners are untouched. I haven't finished the job yet though - just got it taken apart and will reflow it in the morning. Assuming it works and I don't fubar the sticker during reassembly, I'll be trying Gamestop before the weekend. Fortunately there are about 10 Gamestops to choose from within 30 minutes of where I live so hopefully one of them will take it.
