Re: Septic problem or clog?

I was quoted $11,500 this morning. But from all that I've heard about this company they are pretty over priced for this area. I am going to get at least a couple more quotes.

How much would a new drainfield cost? Around here, they are a fraction of that.

For what it is worth, a plumbing company is usually more expensive than what an underground contractor is. Look in the phone book or check with some builders who can give you the phone numbers.

I've worked in construction for close to 40 years and with few exceptions, plumbing companies usually were from 20 to 400% more expensive than the u/g diggers.

Each area is different in prices but with the economy so bad right now, you may be surprised at how cheap you can actually have the work done by a reputable outfit.

The biggest costs are usually the tap fee ($500 in your case) and the road repair if it is an asphalt or concrete road, which usually comes close to doubling the cost. If you have a lead on your lot already, you just saved several thousand dollars and need to tell the contractor before he gives you the quote.

Make sure you don't get rushed into signing a contract till you have had a chance to check the contractor out. There are tons of snakes and cheats in the sewer business so keep your eyes open and ask as many questions as you feel necessary.

Also ask the city DPW and also the building dept. if they have any companies to steer clear of. These 2 depts handle these issues often and hear the horror stories from homeowners about different contractors.

Good luck
