Whaaaattt...we need IE8 already installed to preview the 9 platform...but the whole point is to see if you even like 9 (8 sucks so I'm using 7). Guess I'll wait until 9 comes out.

IE Diagnostics

In recent posts we talked about giving feedback and filing a great bug using a tool called IE Diagnostics that is included with the publically available Internet Explorer Platform Preview releases. We encourage you to include IE Diagnostics reports with every bug submission. This blog post sheds more light on the IE Diagnostics tool by detailing the data included in an IE Diagnostics report, what you can learn from it, and how you can use this information to debug problems you see in IE.

What is IE Diagnostics?

IE Diagnostics is a tool that gathers comprehensive dynamic and static data related to Internet Explorer. The data gathered is packaged up into a .cab file and stored on your machine at a location you specify. If you open the cab, you will find an IEDiag.xml file which contains detailed information related to IE add-ons, registry settings, network configurations, and more. (Click here to view a sample IE Diagnostics report). This data is invaluable when we need to debug a problem in IE without having direct access to the computer, such as, when trying to reproduce and investigate root causes of bugs reported by users.

Since the release of the first Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview at MIX back in March and the second in May, we’ve shown a lot of demos of IE9 with other browsers. Today, Apple announced and released Safari 5. We figured we would show IE9 and Safari 5 together running some of the demos from the Internet Explorer 9 Test Drive website. Recent Microsoft and Intel primers on Internet Explorer 9's accelerated graphics point to snappier Web browsing.

Microsoft will launch the beta of the upcoming Internet Explorer browser on Wednesday at an event in San Francisco as competition from Chrome, Firefox, and Safari has spurred Redmond to beef up its graphics acceleration, among other improvements. And Intel is slated to introduce its Sandy Bridge chip architecture, with features enhanced graphics silicon, at the Intel Developer Forum, which begins on Monday.

In a blog posted on Friday, Microsoft spelled out what it says are the merits of "full vs. partial acceleration," while Intel, in a new video, is claiming IE9 acceleration on its Core i series of chips--which will include new Sandy Bridge processors.

Graphics chip-based acceleration (Microsoft calls it "hardware acceleration") shifts some tasks from the main processor (CPU) to the graphics processor (GPU). Mainstream GPUs pack in dozens or even hundreds of processing cores. While each GPU core delivers a tiny fraction of the processing power of a CPU core, combined, they can tackle certain tasks much more quickly and efficiently than a CPU. Intel, for its part, has improved the built-in graphics on its Core i series of processors and will integrate its fastest graphics function yet onto the CPU in its upcoming Sandy Bridge processor.
