Because not everyone wants to watch an old selection of movies or TV series that are 1 season behind what is currently on TV.
Just a guess...
Also, if Netflix could suddenly offer new movies and new TV shows, they'd have to charge more. Do you really believe they wouldn't have to?
It seems my post went waaaay over your head. Digital delivery is not Netflix.... Netflix makes use of it and does it very well. Taht's why it was used as an example.
