Does anyone have any idea what this is?

After making sure all the frost free hydrants for the barn and pastures are in good order, my next task is to figure out what the heck this thing is...

Frost free hydrant in upper pasture

It has a power plug going into it, but I can see nowhere that anything comes back out of it (unless whatever comes out goes down into the post on which it is mounted - which I highly doubt).

There are no part numbers on the black box itself - only some numbers on the inside lid of the enclosure identifying it as a standard type of enclosure.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My guess it is a control that went to a livestock tank heater.

Yeah, it looks like you're supposed to plug a heater into the back of that plug (the plug coming off that box goes between the heaters' plug and the outlet).

The "Cooler... Warmer" control would let be believe that it's the controller for livestock watering trough heater... as PrntRhd See Profile suggested.

That was my first thought, too... but there are no lines coming out of it to control anything.

Both outlets on the post are live.

I guess I'll just rip it out and see if I can find where lines may have been cut off.

Is that a plug/connector under the double outlet box? Could be the the power and output travel in the same cable.

I agree it plugs into the outlet and a heater plugs into it.
Can you zoom into the plug coming from the box?

It is like a heavy duty version of this dimmer plug but made for a heater.

Good call... there is indeed an outlet on the back of the plug.

Thanks. Maybe my wife can use it for her horses afterall.

It'll maybe save you from lugging buckets of water out to the horses when it's 5 below!

I don't know what it controls, but it looks like a Johnson Controls thermostat. Coming out of the bottom of the control, is there a small capillary tube with a bulb on the end? The knob should pull off, then you can take the cover off and examine it more closely.

Replacements availible from Grainger Thermostat, Electric
Item # 2E535. I'd replace the encloser, weep holes should only be on the bottom, with screen glued over them. Also replace the outlet with a code maker box, with an open back extension box, so you can get the plugs out of the weather. Is it GFI protected? I always like to put the GFI inside, with the outdoor box(es) downstream.
BTW your faucet is not Freeze proof with valves or hoses on the outlet, you must let air into the faucet so it can drain below frost level.

The hose is not on the outlet of the hydrant. That is something jury-rigged by the previous owner to run water to another line that runs to the exterior garage.

And please... I know well enough to leave a valve open when it gets cold.

I suspect that at some point in time, someone had this set up as a watering spot for horses.
