Hertz tried to pull something similar on me, but I had already marked that damage down onto the check out sheet they give you and handed it into them before I left the airport.
Last 2 years I have rented a car they don't have checkout sheets - they give you the key then you drive off. You would actually have to hunt someone down but the only thing to write on is the holder for the key.

Thats because they don't care about scratches or stains. They know the car doesn't have a smashed in headlamp or a big dent in the side when it leaves the lot. So no need to mark those things down.

Well- apparently not as other have said in this thread and been reported in the news. Where the car was damaged in the lot or by someone else and go back 2 renters to get money as lkong as 6-12 months later.

So - yes - they NEED to have the ability for people to write the damage down... because you will care if they come after you. Been a growing trend the last couple years.
