[WIN7] OEM Upgrade to Windows 7

OK, the info surrounding the upgrade is a little confusing.. I just have a couple questions if someone could be so kind to clear it up for me.

I have a couple of HP laptops that we bought a year or so ago. They both have Vista on them and we would like to do a "boot from disc" clean install on them.

1. Does the upgrade version allow for this? Or does there need to be an OS installed already?

2. I can use my OEM keys on the bottoms of the laptops to upgrade, correct?

3. Can i buy just one disc and use it to upgrade both, since they both have different keys?

Thank you for your help!

you can do a clean install with upgrade media but there are some issues to keep in mind. may want to check out supersite for windows, which has covered this process extensively.

I think I read that if you truly want a clean install you would have to clean install vista then do the upgrade. I would think one disk would work on both since you are using your original vista OEM keys on each one.

Edit - I was partially mistaken, for detailed info read - »www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_···edia.asp

I purchased an OEM disk (not upgrade) from NewEgg. I booted from it on my Toshiba and chose to format the disk and do a clean install. It came with the license sticker on the packaging. Of course, with OEM you get no printed manual (pretty useless anyway) and you get no support from Microsoft or your computer manufacturer (in reality, with OEM, you become the manufacturer). The install and product key was activated without problem. On my Toshiba, Windows 7 installed all the drivers I needed except for one for a built-in card reader which I downloaded online. It may be different on your HP.

The clean full, clean install worked flawlessly. Hope you have the same pleasant experience I did.

Yes.. I was able to do just this in upgrading my mother's pc from vista home to win 7 pro. after I backed up her data I booted off the dvd and chose the custom install option and proceeded to format the drive prior to installing.

Those keys are for the OS that came with the laptops, they will not work with Windows 7.

3. Can i buy just one disc and use it to upgrade both, since they both have different keys?
Yes. Provided both keys are for the same edition as on the media (home, pro, ult) I have installed 7 on two pcs using the same dvd image I downloaded from msdn with two different keys.

Do the *full* installation instead.

You did this with the upgrade disc, and not the full disc? If its an upgrade disc, does it ask for your previous OS key to check if you qualify for the upgrade.

Those keys are for the OS that came with the laptops, they will not work with Windows 7.
I guess I worded my 3rd question strangly. I meant to say, will those keys be accepted if I chose the upgrade disc. I was under the impression that you had to provide your previous key if you were upgrading.. I do know they belong to the previous OS.. Sorry.

Thanks for the replys! Appreciate it!
