| Why do they traumatize kids in Phys. Ed. in school?
In grade 8, the P.E. teacher made everyone climb the rope to the top of the gymnasium. If you fall down, from that height, you will die.
Why did the school make grade 8 kids do something that might kill them? I climbed two thirds of the way up, but I wasn't going to go all the way to the top. I'm not stupid.
What is wrong with our schools, when they try to traumatize kids?

Maybe your teacher hated you and thats why you had no mats.
BTW kids are rubbery. They bounce. -- Please take a moment and visit »www.competitivebroadband.com/consumer/ |

| reply to yoyomhz That's the norm attitude for most PE teachers unfortunately. Most of mine carried the title of Coach and many acted like Drill Instructors. This didn't instill in me and others a great love of PE let alone help contribute towards a positive mentality about exercise. The only year I enjoyed Gym class was in 12th grade.
Why because I wasn't screamed at by the Gym teacher, PE teacher, Coach. This was the same Coach that was their all 4 years I went. The Coach had put a stop to belittling his students as well as bullying and insults from other students more physically adapt or just better at a particular sport.
Kids want to be encouraged and motivated not screamed at, put down and bullied. The majority also do not want to be coddled and babied in some PC fashion. They want to be motivated and have fun, for some this means spirited competition but for many it doesn't. But it also doesn't mean that the child isn't willing to participate in physical activity and exercise.
If spirited competition happens naturaly in PE/Gym that is great. But Gyms main goal should be about getting kids physically active, to associate it with fun and build a positive mental image in the students mind. Especially their subconscious where it often gets associated with the negative and painful experiences from childhood. Kids are already overly conscience of their body image and social standing.
It also doesn't help that Schools are doing away with PE/GYM and extracurricular sporting activities. That along with crappie lunch offerings that often have no taste don't help. -- "Sir SIR! We don't use DHCP servers. We only use IBM & Microsoft servers." From there my call to tech support went steadily downhill.

| reply to Varlik We didn't have ropes but we had a drill sergeant style gym teacher who drove us to work as hard as hell at our physical fitness. I hated it when I was young, but in retrospect, it provided me with an extremely positive healthy lifestyle that I brought with me into adulthood. |

| reply to yoyomhz Kids are more likely to die during the car ride to school.
It sounds like your kids were/are going to be quite the precious snowflakes. I can just see them wearing helmets 24/7 or rolling around in a bubble. Kids need to be pushed a bit and get a few scraped knees and bruises. It's part of growing up to be a resilient person and not a useless pansy like so many people these days. |

My teacher was the same way and I love the guy.
He's not allowed to coach the football team anymore, so now our school no longer wins the championships!
Worst. Decision. Ever.
Basically he made a 16 year old cry. What a pathetic kid. |

1 edit | reply to yoyomhz It's my understanding that in Quebec, high school girls are made to climb and perform "athletic routines" on vertical poles in Phys Ed class. This is not intended to traumatize the students but to prepare them for a career in the "arts" a few years down the road.
Those skills are very portable - I have seen many such graduates at gentleman's clubs across Southern Ontario. |

| reply to yoyomhz In the 70's when I lived in TO, we started climbing ropes around grade 4 and yes the P.E. teachers would push us to our limits. I never found this to traumatize me. If anything it was real useful for "ParticipACTION" yearly event. Anyone remember the "how long you can hold at eye level on the chin up bar"? I don't think anyone looked forward to that part of the event. LOL.
A little off topic (sorry), but really aided us in P.E. class was we had "The Health Hustle". Every day before classes started we would do exercise to music. I was one of many leaders. When my family moved to Kingston in '78, I tried to start it here, but it just didn't fly. Oh, well, I still get goosebumps when I hear the music "Popcorn" by Hot Butter. |
