Alma, AR | ram question
I have got some kingston ram that has failed it came as a bundle with my mobo. Should I rma the stuff or go get corsair ram its ddr2 pc26400. |

| Why not provide the mobo type? After all that determines compatibility. Kingston is pretty well a basic DDR solution for most mobo's.
You mean the Kingston failed a prime test? What do you mean "Failed"?
Provide your mobo type, is it AMD or Intel and what chipset? |

2 edits | the mother board is a bio-star TA790GX 128M AMD cpu. The ram itself quit working altogether bios lights show memory error. PC will not boot all I show is blank screen. here are the lights i am talking about. I don't know if its a ram problem or not |

If the RAM quit working, you still have the onboard 645k and can boot either to the BIOS or a disk with the above linked software. Would be easier though to get a friend to load the linked software on a disk and run it.
Did you make sure the DDR sticks are in fact firmly planted in the slot? Most common oversight. Try one stick at a time, starting with bank 0
EDIT~ OoPs Do you get a beep code?

Ok, lets back up a bit, do you have more than one stick of memory, are you sure you placed it in Bank 0 -very firmly?
Yes, there is a problem. Try going into the BIOS, don't change anything right now, just look and what does the voltage say for your memory? If it's a generic build, hitting the delete key after you turn the sytem on will get you into the BIOS and then just key over per the instructions. |

Ok, so you got into the BIOS and does the BIOS see your memory, what are you trying to boot from for an operating system?
Don't know when you bought this mobo, but there is an update BIOS that may fix this, dated 2009-09-17
Failed beep code for that board is one beep, did you hear that (Stated twice you did not)? I guess this is a really good time to ask if you are building this, or was it built?
It's highly likely static hit the memory chips, if you put the sticks in, it's something one must be very careful to pay attention to. It's very rare for two memory sticks to go bad. The kingston chips are probably stock if it's a combo build and that in it's self is not the problem. |

Alma, AR | I bought it in April of this year and built the system my self I downloaded and installed the latest bios last month when I changed my cpu. The mobo does not have a bios beep speaker on it at all. |

You mean you didn't hook the jumper for sound, on the mobo, or it's simply not beeping? I'm almost out of my element...  You had this from April and just now got around to building it up? You downloaded a new BIOS, installed without booting up to begin with to an OS?
It's highly unlikely the 'Brand' of memory is the problem. |

So, it's really not a memory problem; it's a software problem. It's almost to the point that only 2% of memory chips go bad IN a system already running.
Try to go into safe mode F5 (Assuming it's windows) and assuming you did critical updates at some point, you will be able to go back to a previous date by going to START/Accessories/System Tools/ System restore. Bet it works....
After that stay tuned with the security forum. I normally avoid these days, but that's a personal thing to that forum, boss issue I don't get paid nor acknowledged around here, so, I do what I can to help when I want to
BTW -I don't believe you have a memory issue unless you test with the link offered, you might have a virus or malware Or/ a bad PSU. |

It does sound like you have some type of hardware problem, there's something wrong with either the mobo, cpu or RAM. The easiest and most likely cause is the RAM.
Can you please download CPU-z and post a screen of the memory tab? Would it be possible for you to let us know how many sticks of RAM you currently have? |

First things first, download and burn a memtest CD:

Find out which brand of hard drive you have and download the diag tool for said drive. Perform a hard drive scan.
The settings are looking good. I noticed that you mentioned that you did a BIOS update about a month ago. Did you happen to reset the BIOS to defaults after the update? If you haven't, it would be a good idea to start with that. There are generally 3 methods for doing a reset:
1. Within BIOS, load setup defaults (usually optimal)
2. By using the BIOS reset jumper (short for 10secs)
3. Removing the CMOS battery (remove for 10secs) - recommended
After you do the reset, redo the settings according to your needs but leave the RAM settings at default.
Next, before you go to bed tonight, start a memtest and leave it running overnight. If it pop's errors, you can RMA the RAM to Kingston or purchase the Corsair. If it doesn't pop errors then do the following:
Remove 1 stick (either of the two, doesn't matter) and run the system for a few days. If the system hard locks or blue screens on you, swap out the stick with the one you removed and have it running for another few days. Do this to determine which stick is bad. You can also run programs like Prime95 or Orthos will speed up the process but you will have to leave these programs running for a while. This does sound tedious but it will help you determine which stick is bad as some times bad RAM doesn't generate errors in memtest. You may also want to try the RAM on the green? slots if you currently have them in the orange slots.
If you can't determine which RAM stick is bad, you may need to remove the CPU heatsink and take the CPU out of the socket to check for bent pin(s). (I think you should do this first if you are comfortable removing the CPU).

Alma, AR | I am running a pair of western digital 320 GB hard drives running in a raid 1 config. I pulled the cpu and looked at it it looks fine and reapplied paste and put the heat sink back on. |

Hey, I'm sorry I didn't think to mention this sooner:
I have a homebuilt old socket 939 computer. Every so many months I end up having to unplug my RAM sticks and push them back in, and sometimes it takes more than one try.
It's a weird problem, but I've had a lot of problems over the last 4 years.

Alma, AR | I let it run wile I was in bed last night it found no memory errors at all. I reseated the memory this morning still wont boot to windows the 2nd led is still out on the mobo. If everything is good both LED will be lit solid red. |
