Those programs just report numbers that are provided by the modem. which modem do you have?

SpeedTouch 516

But actually, I am on cable internet now!...

So basically, they just connect to the modem web management interface and makes graphics and pretty things out of the numbers that are in the stats page?

No, most of the 3rd-party utilities which work with your Thomson
SpeedTouch 516 happen to be TelNet-based, with the exception
of 'RouterStat'/'RouterStat-Lite'. 'DMT v7.35' is the suitable build
for you, 'OrbMT' and 'STMT' are similar tools but 'DSL_StatScope'
is the most powerful trouble-shooting SoftWare you can find.

So, by connecting to the modem via telnet or with the web interface, I would have the same infos (but it will be less pretty, without graphics and stuff...)

right?

Thanks a lot

to my knowledge, you cannot connect to the telenet interface using a html/web based interface. But yes, I think you get the idea. Those third party programs just report statistic and data that the modem records. The third party software does make it so that the data is neatly organized and easily viewable.

Shortly put, e. g. without the "graphics & stuff", yes. The problem
is that if you use numbers (or even 'DMT'/'OrbMT'/'STMT' captures)
for a while you'll find that instant snapshots are unsatisfactory... It
takes long-term graphics to put all of the data into one simple form
directly accessible to a human brain, 'DSL_StatScope' does it best.
