furnace burner startup

i have a york circa 1994 high efficiency gas furnace. the exhaust blower runs several minutes 3 to 4 before burner kicks on. after the furnace runs for a few minutes, the burners go out for maybe 30 seconds and then turn back on. got any ideas?

Is is possible to change the topic?

while i was looking into this, i smelt a burning smell after it kicked on, when i checked it out, there was smoke coming out of the unit! good thing i had a fire extinguisher nearby. i opened the door to the unit and put it out. with that said,

i am now in the market for a new furnace, any recommendations?

The most important thing is to find a good installer. I feel that is a much more important issue than the brand. Try to find some local recommendations and check your local BBB.

Why don't you have a qualified tech come out and give it a once over. You may have a minor issue causing the problems and can save a lot over a new install. My first step would be to a call a reputable tech.

You're going to replace it when you have no idea what really happened? Was it just a seized blower bearing causing the belt to smoke? That isn't really that old of a furnace. Get it checked by a professional who knows what they are looking at.

Sounds like it may be flame roll-out or overheating heat exchanger, or some other part failing and overheating (motors likely).

Exactly what part of the furnace started burning?

Anyways, you'll want to have a qualified tech take a look at it. Could be a simple problem and not worth replacing the entire furnace.

Update: I cleaned up everything inside and switched some of the wiring around and replaced some, when i turned it on though, there was a strong electric noise and spark, and then my main blew note to others, never purchase a york, still not recommendations on furnace brands? may end up just going trane, more expensive, but trusted and reliable unlike york

Everyone has given you good advice about finding a tech to assess your situation. If after the assessment you do need or want a new unit try to find some companies with good local recommendations and get them to bid the job. Not to offend, but you might not have the necessary skill to be attempting this yourself. As far as York or Trane units go - it is more important to choose the installer than the unit, because most of the units are fairly comparable in a given range and the installer is who will be backing the warranty. Doing this work yourself without adequate knowledge or tools might actually be fatal. I have seen York and Trane in commercial service and both work fine if installed and maintained correctly.

I do not think you understand that I have a lot of experience in fixing a variety of things. While admittedly never installed an entire HVAC system, I have replaced many parts and components for various clients. An HVAC system is simply not that complicated, unless there are multiple failing parts from cheap manufactures.

If possible this can be added to my last post, I forget to mention that I have not got any good advice yet, infact, I have got nothing I asked for

Thank you for the first response to my question. Any specific reasons you know of? Just curious since my research and sources have told the exact opposite. Not saying your wrong, just wondering if you know specifically why you have been told they are crap.

Ok, I'm sensing a bit of troll in this post. If this is for real, you say you "switched some wires around" and the main blew. Could it be, maybe, that you're messing around with the wires caused the main to blow? Obviously it was wired up for the furnace to work before so what would rewiring accomplish?

Please call an HVAC company.

I am an electrical professional. remember the small fire damaged the wiring, which is why i replaced it. I think a faulty circuit board may have resulted in the main blowing. Might have been damaged from the fire. At this point a new furnace is a better option.

When I replaced my 28 year old York furnace & a/c system 3 years ago I went with American Standard. So far, I am well pleased with my units. I have always had good results from any American Standard products that I have ever used. Plus the company that installed the units were professional installers and came highly recommended. They are a local HVAC company.

Thank you, that was one brand i couldn't find a lot of info about. Anyone have experience with a commercial rooftop / attic unit in a home? I mean, if i'm going to replace, i might as well go all out

You couldn't find any info on American Standard? Come on, it's a frickin Trane. Have you done any research? If you have you would have found this out fairly fast. You think York are unreliable? Wait until you price replacement parts for Trane/American Standard. You seem to know it all, why are you here asking questions?

Here's a question for you since HVAC is simple and you are a professional. What is wrong with your furnace? Do you even know?

Please, If you are not going to read all the posts, and just post rude comments with no knowledge that are completely off topic, and not helping the question, do not post.

Thanks.
