settings keep reverting to default

My hardware set up is as follows: HD DVR box >HDMI cable > AV Receiver > HDMI cable > Panasonic Plasma. Sound is only played thru receiver, speakers on TV are deactivated.

I have found that in order for the HD DVR box to send a 5.1 digital signal to the receiver, I must go into one of the menus on the box, accessed by power, select, menu. In this menu is an additional HDMI settings page, with an audio output setting which must be changed from AUTO to PASS THROUGH . Several times a week, this setting is defaulted back to AUTO, which kills my digital surround output from the box. By the way, it also changes the 4:3 override from OFF back to 480p at the same time. This one is not such a hassle to change back because it can be accessed thru one of the main menus on the box.

Does anybody out there know why this happens so frequently, and is there a way to prevent it. I can understand this occasionally happening when major software changes are implemented, but several times a week? It is a royal pain in the neck.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts

This actually happens to me every time. We use an A/V receiver and the QIP6200 box that is left on because of an external recording device.

I have determined that it's an HDMI handshake issue between the STB, A/V receiver and TV.

IF there is a long enough delay between the time the TV is turned on before the A/V receiver is turned on, then the 4:3 override remains OFF.

I use a Harmony 550 remote and while I wasn't able to get a programmed delay to work, in my particular case the A/V receiver and TV are also the output devices for our HTPC so if I select that activity first, THEN switch the A/V receiver to use the STB as the input device everything is fine.

(I get dinged on the HAF though until I can get the Harmony to do the delay though -- he's the absented mind-sort )

As to ;your comments about the video setting changing, I never really considered that. By the way, the DVR is model 6416. One thing of note.

My TV is set up to turn on and off the Receiver automatically via HDMI, thus I think the two turn on with the same delay every time...whatever that delay is using the link included in HDMI. The remote does not signal the receiver to turn on. By the way I use a Universal RF 20 remote, which as its name implies is RF with an infra-red blaster. I don't actually see when the receiver turns on because it is in a crawl space and not visible. But I assume it really doesn't vary in delay relative to the tv, however sometimes the setting changes, the majority of times it doesn't. One other note, the return to default generally appears to happen overnight.

I think somehow the EAS Test changes the audio settings and does not put them all back to what they were.
I find on my STB's after I have to re set the Volume Control back to fixed and Dynamic Range back to heavy.

Is the "pass through" setting for the receiver? It sounds like your receiver and STB are powering up befor the TV, in which case the handshake would occur there, not with the TV (which is why the overide goes back to 480p, probably what your receiver supports.). I see this on my setup, and the solution is to ensure that the TV powers up before the receiver (I use a pass through feature also). If the STB and receiver are powered up together without the TV, then the STB reverts to 480i because that's what the receiver reports for the HDMI handshake since it doesn't have the TV handshake in effect. If the TV is on first, everything works as it should. It took me awhile to figure this out, but now I can realiably duplicate the unwanted result and avoid it.

I am not sure if I follow your question. The pass thru setting has nothing to do with the video signal. It only affects the audio signal. The pass through setting is made on the STB. It is done thru the menu you access by hitting power, select, menu. Once there, you use the additional HDMI settings, and in the Audio Output Menu you select "pass through". This appears to allow the STB to send a 5.1 digital signal to the Receiver via the HDMI cable. If the Audio Output Menu is set to Auto, no digital audio signal is sent via the HDMI cable to the receiver. None of this has anything to do with the TV.

As to the override issue, I don't think this has anything to do with which component starts first. The order is always the same as it is controlled automatically by my remote, and the majority of the time the override stays off. Only sometimes does it revert to 480p, but the sequence of starting has not changed. I think it might be due to some kind of signal sent by the system over night, perhaps along the lines of what icemannyr1 said earlier in this string.
