| Pre-Installation Question
I have a telephone pole in my yard on the left front and to the side of my older ranch style home. However, my power meter is on the right side in the rear of my garage. Did anyone have this same delima and how did they resolve it? Will they just wrap the fiber around the house until they get to the power meter location? My ideal plan would be to get the fiber ran through my attic from the side where the pole is to my garage where the meter and my house wiring is terminated in the newly installed (by me so no phone at the moment - presently all cellular home) Network/Phone box.
Thanks for some input, especially if you already resolved the same in your home. |

| Your house most likely had phone service to it at one point. Normally the Fios was run the same way. But due to new grounding requirements it is often necessary to place the ONT next to the electric meter.
I take it your getting the triple play, and have an existing cable drop.
Anyhow, drops are attached to the strand of the phone cable if a direct run to a pole is not possible. Most likely the Fios will take the same path as the electric and cable drops. |

| Yes it had phone service a long time ago. The old Verizon POTs was drilled into the rear wall of the house. That was in the early 70's. Then came Cox who setup at the corner near the pole and put their own ground stake in...many grounding issues with that setup due to multiple grounds. I have removed all of the ancient wiring (old RG58 like wiring from early 80's I'm told- I say like because it isn't lable and is a faded pink- for cable which barely met specs for Cox) and replaced everything with CAT5e-Telephone, CAT6-LAN and RG6QS-TV...all homeruns to my house distribution panel in the garage. At first the "RG58" was ran in the crawlspace. That has since been sealed and redone. I have everything going through the attic, which makes servicing much easier.
My goal for the fiber through the attic is to get an inside mounted ONT. If not, then I am still within 20ft of the power meter and its ground rod.
My phone cable is and has been laying on the trees in my yard from the pole since Hurricane Isabel. Verizon never came to remove nor repair it eventhough I had them in my yard for over a month after the cleanup (a tree ripped three poles down).
Yes, I am getting the triple play. If I ever go back to Cox, then they too will have to move it to the power meter where my house is now properly terminated. |

| As long as it meets spec and isn't a safety hazard, chances are the installer will accommodate your request. I would make sure there is clear access to and through the attic to make his decision easier. If everything is centralized near the meter in regards to phone and coax, it's pretty much to his advantage. |

The attic has a walkway from one side to the other which I used heavily when I was rewiring the house.
Yes, all is centralized now. All that is needed after mounting the ONT and accessories is to patch into the panel for TV, Internet and phone. I even have newly made and tested RG6QS and CAT6 patch cables along with appropriate AV cables at each installation point. I just have to pull the washing machine out to give the installer easier access to where the best place to run the ground wire to the outside.
Is there anything else I should do? I setup my email online already and have downloaded the other files that were suggested by VZ emails (i.e. Media Manager, etc.). |

| If all of your wiring is inside, he should have a JIONT which would allow him to use the grounded power outlet as a ground source instead of running a ground.
It sounds like an easy install for the tech. He will mount the ont, activate it and move / install a phone line to connect to your wiring. He most likely will place the Actiontek router with the ont because of your patch panel. He should then test the outlet for proper signal and activate everything without issue. Regards... |

The JIONT(inside) ONTs require an external ground if within 4 feet of the Electric panel. It can be accessed inside if it is bonded to the electric service ground. |

Perhaps I'm interpreting your response incorrectly, but if there is an electric bond available at the panel, you do not have to go external. If the ground rod is immediately available, then that is the first choice, but not mandatory. Again, the four foot rule is in play here. |

| First choice is the ground rod. Often there is not enough room to place another clamp, and the existing clamp is not to be moved in any way. Sometimes the rod is in concrete or macadam and might create a hazard to run a wire to it.
In this case since the fiber drop may enter from the attic, it just might make more sense to ground to the electrode grounding conductor,then to move the washing machine and drill a separate whole which could be an unnecessary risk(drilling blindly through Sheetrock).
Normally a 7/8" or 1" whole is drilled to accommodate the head of the fiber, and the same whole can be used for the ground as long as it is in a plastic tube when penetrating material such as wood/Sheetrock.
It is not recommended, nor standard practice to open the electric panel and ground inside it. |

| I didn't know about the 4 feet rule. I was told 20 feet to ground rod. My panel is actually 7 feet from the electrical panel. I guess it could mount on the same wall as my panel, which has a grounded outlet there too. My ground rod doesn't have much room for another clamp either. The electrician who rewired my house and added a new panel pounded the rod into the ground pretty good.
Do they have to put the router on the ONT? I want it centrally located ontop of my entertainment center, which I have already ran homeruns of RG6QS and CAT6 for that location. Everything is labeled too. I will leave a label stating to use T568A to keep consistant with the rest of the wiring. |

That is exactly what they did for my install. JI ONT is in a coat closet with 9100EM mounted next to it, both plugged into a regular grounded outlet. It took a 7/8" hole in the 'bird block', through the attic and into the closet from above.
Before that, lots of discussion about grounding to panel (on opposite side of house). A neighbor's install was with a pre-existing ground rod. (I was told VZ would not put in a ground rod for me, so if you go that route, install it yourself). |

Thank you for your reply. I knew I couldn't be the only one in this situation. This makes me confident that it can be done. Going through the "bird block" is what I was hoping. I will have my drill and bit ready.
I didn't know that they could/would use a grounded outlet for common house ground. I have two at the wiring box, one on top (for VZ) and one on the side (for Cisco Switch).
I hope that they put the router on my entertainment center where I already have a coax and CAT6 waiting. |

| I installed a standard outlet in my closet because the 'JI ONT' does not use a separate power supply. We ended up leaving coils of extra fiber in the attic rather than packing them into the ONT.
The JIONT makes for a nice neat install - for voice, they simply ran a standard 2pair cable back outside to the existing NID & clipped the existing copper drop to it.
They will put the router where you want it, for me, it was cleaner in the closet (I don't use the wireless since I have a separate 11n box).
The default install is ONT coax to splitter - one leg for TV, the other for router. Cat5/6 from router to your network. You can ask for both coax & Cat5 to router if you want to replace their router. See the FIOS FAQ here for details. |

| Well I had my install this morning. It only took a few hours which included waitng on the intaller's boss running out a HDDVR to updrade my HDSTB. They both kept raving about my setup and how easy I made it for them.
I have the fiber coming through the bird block, through the attic and to my distribution panel. There he installed the JIONT (ONT1000GJ2) next to my TV/Phone/Network distribution panel. His boss okayed the work and stated that he wished more were like this. I'm not sure of the differences of this and other JIONTs and ONTs, but so far so good. Yes, it is provisioned for CAT (LAN/WAN) and MOCA (TV). The installer was very good and thorough. He walked me through the features...man is this different from what I am used to.
My boxes are at Release 1.6.2 Build 08.58 and is a QIP-7216 P1. Do i force an update or just wait for it on its own? |
