| [Rant] Citi....ARGH!
Watch your mail!
Any of you that want to talk about "pay it off every month", "I don't used credit cards", etc, etc. SAVE IT!!! Don't want to hear it and don't really care.
I first started having to carry a balance on credit cards when my son was born and the insurance company/hospital messed up. Our daughter cost us $30 out of pocket for the whole pregnancy and 3 years later my son cost us $12,000....right when I became a Realtor and the market crashed 6 months later. So, for some of us, carrying a balance is not an option.
Myself and my wife have credit scores over 800, have never missed a payment or been late for anything.
I just got a notice raising my credit card rate from 6.99% fixed to 29.99% variable.
I've had this card for 6 years.
When I called them to opt out, they didn't even attempt to fix things.
I've never paid late, I never pay just the minimum payment, I've ran the balance up to about 75% of the limit and then paid it all off....twice.
Their reasoning for the increase was that it costs them more to borrow money than it did before....B.S. That's the biggest crock I've ever heard.
After I could tell they were going to do nothing to try to keep me as a customer, I canceled my other two cards with them as well. I spoke with the person that answered the phone as well as a supervisor and they both said they got the same letter.
I have no problem paying off debt for what I borrow. I have had some very tough months where we are just getting by. We've cut expenses as far as we can without having to live in our car.
This same thing happened with Chase about 6 months ago.
Here is my theory and what I'm going to do. Since we as a country continue to bail these banks out. Then we give them 6 months notice that the rules are going to change so they can bend us over in the meantime by jacking rates 400%, they don't deserve to get paid back.
If they are going to steal from me like that, I'm going to steal from them. I've already set up an appointment with a bankruptcy attorney for Monday, and I'll be taking all of my credit cards down with it. Keep the house, keep the cars, screw the banks like they are trying to screw all of us.
Hell, in ten years our country is going to be so screwed anyway, what's the difference. We keep throwing fake money after good money and it's about to break the backbone of our nation. |

| reply to Hesher How much you want to be that credit score is going below 800?
I'd call them back and reinstate those two cards. Otherwise, you will now be maxed on one card and you've lost the available credit from those other two cards.
Bankruptcy doesn't mean you don't have to pay your debts... I'm sure you know that.

| reply to Hesher I think credit cards and the "easy money" mentality that goes with them has done more to hurt the country than all the bank failures.
It's been building since the mid-'60's, when gas company and department store cards begat Visa, then MasterCard, then Amex, then America went on a spending spree that just only recently choked.
If the insurance company/hospital "screwed up," hold them accountable. If you don't like the credit card issuer, cancel your cards (you did) and find another provider.
I don't think you can declare bankruptcy unless your debts significantly outweigh your assets. Good luck with that. -- Read your contract and TOS before signing anything. |

| reply to Hesher I'd had a Citi Mastercard since 1999 with a $1200 balance. I was throwing about $300 a month at it.
Never late -- no other real debt but the house high credit score etc...
They raised my rate as well...
I went to my credit union and got a 7.9% fixed rate then proceeded to PIF and close CITI. 29.9% is usurious and I'll never spend another dime w/ them. |

| reply to Hesher Chapter 7 I should be able to get the credit cards wiped clean. I do have a lot more than the $12K debt from when my son was born. Our income level is not near the median right now....heck it's 1/3 of what it was before I had the great idea of becoming a Realtor (even though I'm number 6 in the county).
Couldn't really do anything about the insurance company/hospital deal......actually, I should've said doctor instead of hospital. My son was born c-section. We knew my wifes employer was changing insurance companies the day before the c-section was scheduled for. We gave the doctor all of the new insurance info. Even when we checked in at the hospital the night before, the hospital had the old insurance info....we called the doctor right then and he said they'd get the new info to the hospital right then.
My son ended up going into nicu (?) for bile in his lungs.
Two weeks later we took him back to get his circumcision and when we checked him in, they still had the wrong insurance info.
Well, the new insurance company decided that since they weren't notified within 24 hours of him going into nicu that they were not going to cover that portion of the bill. What can you do at that point....it's a bunch of he said she said. |

| reply to Hesher Oh, and I really don't care about my credit score right now. I'll build it back up in time. Heck, I talked with a client that filed a bk ..... they did the same thing I'm thinking about doing, and their score never even fell.
I have 6 more payments on two reliable cars. I refinanced my house 4 months ago at 4.875% for 30 years. My kids are still at the inexpensive ages, so I'm not too worried about it.
I've always thought less of people that don't repay their debt and just pull a bk card, but really, when it gets down to it, whats good for the goose is good for the gander |

2 edits | I would contact both the FTC and your Congressperson.. There have been numerous complaints about credit companies doing this very thing for no reason or for the thinnest excuse. This is why Congress just passed a law making the proposed changes in consumer credit laws that crack down on the abusive practices take effect this month instead of sometime next year. |

| reply to Hesher Except my congressman doesn't like me too much!
You summed it up though. The new rules are going into effect, so they are trying to beat it to the punch. Why would the government give them notice of the changes months before it takes effect? I just don't get that. It's like telling a thief that I'm not going to lock my car doors tonight, but I will on Saturday night. |

| reply to Hesher Yea, my Citi card used to be like 17% and now its went to 27% !! I've never been late and had the card since 2002. I'm going to pay it off come tax time and I really want to cancel the card, but I've always been told you should always keep your oldest account cause it makes your credit look good. |

| reply to Hesher They recently did this to me also. My question though, is the new rate applied to the current balance or only on new purchase with the old balance being charged at the old rate? I'm sure it was in that letter that they sent but I can't seem to find it. Thanks in advance! |

| reply to Hesher They are full of crap. They just need to make profit here to make up for their failings elsewhere (everywhere else?)
Even if you never carried a balance, they still make good profit off of you.
Luckily, there are other companies out there. Were you or anyone in your family ever a Vet? There's the USAA card. -- "Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini

| reply to Hesher I had something like this happen with a HSBC where they wanted to raise the interest rate (got a notice in the mail) from my 6.99% fixed to 13.5% variable.
I was like "Hell no!" and I sent the letter "certified" to the address they listed.
about 5 days later I noticed the account is "closed" So far my interest rate hasn't went up at all, and I am just paying off the balance.
I really haven't gotten a new credit card yet and not sure if I really want the expense of having another one. -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this. Koetting Ford, Granite City, illinois... YOU'RE FIRED!!

| reply to beerbum This is why Congress just passed a law making the proposed changes in consumer credit laws that crack down on the abusive practices take effect this month instead of sometime next year. Unfortunately Congress is partly to blame. They should have just enacted these rules immediately, instead of giving credit card companies a year's grace period to jack everyone's APRs up as high as humanly possible.
