| Connecting a router to CenturyTel Fiber
My Aunt moved into a new home thats serviced by CenturyTel fiber connection in the Wright City, Missouri area.
When they installed the data line from the box outside they pretty much just drilled a hole from outside directly into the computer room, my aunt was pissed about that because they said thats the "only way" but thats another story. So its just a ethernet line from the outside box directly into the computer and they use Windows to dial/connect to the net using PPPoE.
That all works fine a dandy but she would like to connect a wireless router. I drove 45 minutes(traffic) to her house because she couldn't get her Linksys WRT54G to work with it. I eventually gave up after 1 1/2 hours myself.
I set the router up the exact same way the computer was set to connect, got no connection. Went through the router setup forwards and backwards, tried cloning the NIC's MAC address, tried setting to just DHCP from the data line, checked username and passwords, but the router just could not connect. Sometimes I'd get an error about not being able to retrieve a IP address(PPPoE mode).
If the computer is set up to connect using PPPoE and requires them to manually press the connect button everytime doesn't that mean that the modem, if there even is one, is already set into a bridged mode? I have no idea on how to check settings for the modem since I can't even get access to it in the box to find the model number or any info at all.
Any advise is greatly welcomed. |

| Likely what is outside the house is a fiber to ethernet device. I think your on the right path to set the router to PPPoE and enter the username and password.
I would first disconnect the connection on the computer, then setup the router. Should be straight forward, but I have not had the pleasure of setting a connection like this up.
Double check the username and password, the username should include "@centurytel.com". -- Ofallon, Mo Weather St. Peters, Mo Weather |

That's what I thought it should be but with the current PPPoE connection settings in windows the "@centurytel.com" is missing and it connects. I guess theres always a chance the router is bad or acting up. I'll probably bring another one with me next time I visit. |

1 edit | reply to Flummoxed PPPoE is the correct setting. Around here we mount a box on the outside of the house called an ONT for fiber customers. There is an Ethernet port inside that ONT, no modem, just pushing straight Ethernet into your home. All the settings are made back in the Central Office. We simply extend that Ethernet port inside with a cat 5 and terminate on a jack. If the customer does not want a router, it is set up as described above with a broadband connection on the computer used to establish the PPPoE connection. I have programed several of the WRT54G routers for customer's in the past, although it has been a year or so due to switching positions. You should be able to just simply set the router to PPPoE put in the Username and Password, (I have never used the @centurytel.com, but maybe that is a new thing), connect the Ethernet cable from the wall to the correct port on the router and then connect. If the broadband connection is currently working on the computer, there shouldn't be any reason for it not to work on that router. I have seen where it would take several connection attempts for that router to actually connect though, and by several I mean upwards of 10, but whenever that was an issue, it also took several times for the computer to connect via the broadband connection. Sounds like you are on the right track though, trying with PPPoE. Also just a reminder that the User/Pass are case sensitive... |

| reply to Flummoxed How long would the authentication system hold the computers login?
My guess, is you can't login more than once via the pppoe, and when you are trying with the router, the pc is still in the system.
Total guess on my part. -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |
