info when calling (new area code)

Just a reminder to those of you with Chicago telephones...

On Saturday, November 7, 2009, the area code 872 will overlay the 312 and 773 area codes.

Land line telephone users in the 312 and 773 area codes will need to dial 11 digits (1+area code+phone number) even if the number they are calling is in the same area code as their phone.

Cell phone users in the 312 and 773 area codes will need to dial 10 digits (area code+phone number) even if the number they are calling is in the same area code as their phone.

This is similar to the 224 overlay of 847.

Didnt know they were doing that with another chicago area code.

They did that with the 630 2 years back. I remember coming home for thanksgiving break, and going to call on a landline our favorite pizzeria (Barone's!) and was confused when the number didn't work. I was scared that they had closed!

Now I just habitually dial the area code, no matter where I call.

This is similar to the 224 overlay of 847.
...and, as mentioned, the 331 overlay of 630.
...and the 779 overlay of 815.
...and the 534 overlay of 715 in Wisconsin.

I understand the purpose overlays serve: existing customers don't have to be inconvenienced by a geographic split. However, until a few years ago, the trend had been to do a geographic split at least once, then do overlays for future additions. Now, as we see in 815 and 715, area codes covering huge areas are not even being split first. I think both of those area codes should have been split instead of overlaid... but this is the general trend, with area codes becoming fairly meaningless.

Just my opinion.

I went through the same thing, I bitched at Comcast after they just installed my phone, asking why wasn't my calls going through. Even though our area wasn't in the area slated for having to dial area, we eventually did.
NOW it's a habit for calling on the phone, period.
