So who here is planning to install it? The reported lack of KDE 3.5 is a dealbreaker for me. I won't end up mibrating to 4.whatever until I am, absolutely forced to... |

1 edit | I definitely will upgrade. I'm on 11.1 with KDE 4.2 and love it. KDE4.0 was unusable, 4.1 was bit better but still crap however I have had only one minor issue with 4.2 and it is rock solid for me. Using it daily as my main (only) OS. Planning to switch my wife from XP to openSUSE with this release too. -- openSUSE 11.1, KDE 4.2 |

VERY impressed with what they have done. If you like pretty desktops kde 4.3 is the way to go. Personally I LOVE dolphin too. |

SUMwarePremium join:2002-05-21 kudos:2 2 edits | reply to dohnut Ready to install 11.2 into its own partition with ext4 while configuring it. Will continue to run 11.1 till it's ready. Was using KDE3 but now going to give XFCE a go as I'm not keen on running KDE4.
I'll be scanning the global servers to grab the DVD iso as soon as it appears.

OutOfMemopenSUSE 11.4Premium join:2001-05-11 | reply to dohnut I just completely broke my openSUSE 11.1 installation while trying to fix a Nvidia / display issue. (I cannot boot to it anymore, and having an encrypted root partition makes it even more difficult.) I won't be able to use my desktop computer until 11.2 is released.
Will it be possible to install to a new encrypted root partition using the DVD, while preserving my existing encrypted home partition? (I am not currently using LVM.)
I read that the DVD installer will only support installing to an encrypted LVM volume, and not a traditional partition.
Man, I really messed up big this time, all because I just had to upgrade my Nvidia driver's when nothing was wrong with the older drivers.
A lesson learned. I hope openSUSE 11.2 will bring my PC back to working order. |

I was contemplating that, actually, but when I realized how soon 11.2 was going to be released (and the fact that I was planning to do a fresh install of it anyways), I figured the "worst" that could happen is that I would have to solely use my laptop for the next six days. And what do you know! (I did make a full backup of my /home partition, none-the-less.)
Any ideas on the fresh install / encryption issue? The only information I could find on openSUSE 11.2 and encryption is a couple of feature request that started several months ago, and that the final release of 11.2 will only support encrypting LVM volumes during installation. (Which is fine, I don't mind, as long as it can work with my existing encrypted home partition.)
Now if they only stuck with GNOME as the "default" choice for the desktop environment... (Can't let KDE get all the attention now!) |

said by OutOfMem:Now if they only stuck with GNOME as the "default" choice for the desktop environment... Naturally GNOME is available, as is XFCE, etc. Just make your choice during install. You can install more than one DE, and easily switch between them. |

pabloMVM join:2003-06-23 kudos:1 | reply to dohnut Howdy,
I downloaded the latest RC and installed it in a VM. I'm a bit wary of KDE 4.x so I install Xfce too. The mouse-logo is cute.
My plan is to trick-out the VM while noting what I've done. I'll do bare-bones installation on my laptop first. Either with Xfce or KDE.
I think I'm an old fart because I'm not into the eye-candy. I prefer speed over flash.

| reply to dohnut I will probably continue with 11.0 until they discontinue support for that. I don't have any objection to 11.2, but I also don't see any urgency to upgrade. -- AT&T Uverse; Zyxel NBG334W router (behind the 2wire gateway); openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.15 |

I have to agree with this...
Just upgraded to KDE 4.3 from 4.2, on OpenSuSE11.1... my only "complaint" about 4.3 seems to be that I can no longer access the Terminal (Konsole) directly from the desktop in SU mode... I need to physically type in SU.
I'm sure that I'm missing something obvious, but haven't had time to mess with it.
Is anyone going to try the upgrade path (now that it is "officially" supported), or are you going to stick with a fresh load? |

I use KDE 4 and it works and always had from the expectations I had of it in whatever form it was when released. Excluding reboots and hardware changes that's 700+ days 24/7 on my main desktop. I don't try it a little or just use some KDE 4 apps, it's the full desktop plus little bits running I probably don't need but they're there and don't hurt me. I know how it works I guess so the repeated negatives here and elsewhere do become old and tiresome. I know it's performance, it's resource useage, it's good things and bad things and I know it works for the desktop environement it's suppose to be. Previously I used KDE 3, even used a week or so ago on an old box, worked good, got the job done but I still updated the whole system to a KDE 4.3.3 desktop and it still works just as good on that 5 year old hardware. Works fine on a 10 year old laptop too but that's just crazy talk...
The point is that it works and those that hate should use something else obviously no matter what the subject is but in this case it serves no purpose to repeat the same tired line like a sensastionalist ad driven news website would.

It's much easier for the trolls to just post baseless and never ending rants than actually try something or to just shutup and use what they like. We even have some die hard Aaron Seigo haters here too because he killed their beloved desktop (except what they like still works exactly like it always has).
So in summary they hate something new because it's not exactly like the previous version which still exists and works to this very day. Very strange... -- Say no to JAMS! |

reub2000Premium join:2001-12-28 Evanston, IL | reply to DanD I didn't try the 4.0 and 4.1 series, but I can definitely say that 4.3.3 is up to the task. Part of the problem for the 4.x series was living up to the greatness of 3.5, but I think it's there. Plus composite in KWin makes me smile.
Amarok 2.0 and 2.1 where definitely broken, but I'm very much enjoying 2.2.
To each his own I guess. It seems like 3.5.10 was the last release ever of the 3.5 branch. -- My pbase gallery |

Since 11.1 will continue to be supported it is possible that additional KDE3 updates may be released. It is also possible that KDE3 could be forked and become independently supported (very unlikely). |

SUMwarePremium join:2002-05-21 kudos:2 | reply to dohnut For the past hour or so been playing with openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686. Very pretty. It would take some getting used to after using KDE3. Didn't run the GNOME LiveCD version. Looking forward to giving Xfce a spin when the DVD becomes available.
Needed to run sax2 after booting to obtain correct screen rez and refresh rate. |
