1 edit | My Website got Suspended by HostGator
Alright, so I bought a hosting plan for my website at the end of September. Long Story short, I accidently maxed out my credit card, and they were unable to bill me in October, so they Suspended my site.
I guess it was actually a blessing in disguise, because I found another company where I can get the same plan for almost half the cost.
I am wondering is it possible for me to transfer my domain to another host, without me having to Pay HostGator?
And what will happen to the e-mail address that I had setup with HostGator? |

1 edit | reply to Lil Jon I presume you have a domain name. If so is that paid for and where did you get that from? If the domain name is paid for and not by hostgator just point it somewhere else. Still if you are not hosting yourself you need to pay someone new to host. If you are doing that why not pay host gator? if you bought your domain name thru host gator then? Either way you still owe hosy gator. |

| reply to Lil Jon I don't think you are under some kind of contract wit them?
so if you don't want to pay/continue service it should not be a problem.
you need to connect with your domain registrar (hopefully not hostgator as they can be dicks and hold your domain hostage) and change the NS records to the new host.
if old host and new host uses cpanel you can ask for a backup and transfer it to the new host and ask them to restore it, making all your email addresses and accounts up and running again.
else you need do that manually.
once the domain is pointed it to the new host just recreate the email address and voila back in business.

| reply to Lil Jon Hostgator wouldn't be a 'dick' for holding his domain, until his bills were all paid up.
But yes, hopefully he didn't register his domain with them. -- »vivicalhosting.com - Reliable, and very affordable web hosting, VPS, and Dedicated solutions.

| I bought the domain through GoDaddy.
I don't feel like I owe HostGator anything though, because I never actually "completed" the site. i only had a 20 Kb HTML page uploaded. Only about 10 people viewed the site, the entire time it was up. It's not like I was using any real traffic or bandwidth... |

By setting up an account / website with them, you agreed to their payment terms which were not contingent on you actually using it or not. That's like saying: oh hey, I didn't use my phone this month so I don't owe the phone company anything. |

| reply to Lil Jon Flaming aside and ignoring what's right and wrong, if the domain is with GoDaddy, then all you need to do is repoint the NS records to the new host and have them set up a DNS zone on their end. If you want your content from HostGator though, you will more than likely need to pay them to reactivate the account so you can obtain your files. -- Submit phishing to phishtracker |

| reply to Lil Jon This situation illustrates the necessity of doing backups of your website. With your domain registered with by a separate domain registrar (godaddy) it would have been very easy to move to another domain and upload the backup and be good to go.
