Windows 7 direct to Speedstream 5100 (4 light)

I am trying to help a family member remotely. They have a new Windows 7 machine. DSL basic I think. Using Speedstream 5100 (4 light model). The PC connects directly to the Speedstream modem, no router involved. This same setup worked under Windows XP.
They had some line problems (due to recent home remodeling work) which have been resolved. Now when opening IE on Windows 7, they get an AT&T web page stating they are running an incompatible OS or browser. Sorry for the lack of details, I am trying to get senior citizens to provide technical details.

My sympathies about trying to pry details out of your family member. Most of my clients are like that so I know how much it makes you want to strangle someone.

Was everything working in Win7 before the line problems or have things been changed?

The Windows 7 machine is fresh outta the box, never connected to web.

Could it be that when they set up the Win7 PPPoE, they typo'd the login and password? I don't think there's a problem with Win7 or IE8 but without knowing exactly which page they're seeing it's hard to say what's going on.

Run ipconfig - if your IP starts with 99.142 - most likely an incorrect Password or mistyped username.

If your IP starts with 99.143 - 100% mistyped username or the username does not exist in our database.
99.143.x.x refers to username issue.

Basically our system recognizes a problem with your username and/or password and is trying to load a webpage with a software download to help determine your problem.

Since your IOS is win7 - our system hasn't been updated with the compatibility check for win7 - hence your error.
