| Trust me, it is NOT unlimited. Nothing offering storage nor bandwidth is truly unlimited. I have no clue if they are actually any good or not, never used them. Just making sure folks know that unlimited doesn't mean "unlimited", lol. -- Images are Copyrighted and use is NOT permitted. |

| reply to vrp I looked all over the site, couldn't find any language around "unlimited" - usually there is some sort of disclaimer, but I couldn't find one.....
I'm sure there is some limit though... -- "We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us.... We are far too easily pleased." C.S. Lewis |

| reply to vrp on help page I did see some information regarding storage: »www.backblaze.com/help.html
10. How much data can I backup to Backblaze? You can backup as much as you wish. By default, we backup all of your personal files. Realistically, uploading at todays cable or DSL speeds, it will take a long time to backup more than a few dozen gigabytes. .
... so that is what they mean by unlimited ... |

| reply to vrp Means very simply....
They ain't got a f****ing clue what they're doing. Nobody in that business in their right mind would ever say something like that.
Stay away! Stay faaaar away, these guys won't be around for long, and if so, neither will your files. -- Justin - DSLR resident grouch and Mr Negativity TSI Fanboy - "Dontchya wish your 'net was hot like mine! Ohhh Dontchya!" Have a nice day! |

| reply to vrp Either that or they are banking on more ISP's putting caps on net use, they might have guessed your everyday residential user on Comcast will only be able to upload 250 gigs / month at max or they are banking on alot of the users only uploading small amounts of data.
Either way I would go with a more reputable company that gives more details. -- SurfingOC.com / GsdPhotography.com |

| reply to vrp Appreciated the discussion here and just wanted to clarify. When we say "unlimited" we really mean it. Some of our customers are storing over 10 TB of data with us. Of course, we lose money on those customers, but on average, we make money. We don't assume that ISPs have caps (Comcast published their cap a while after we launched our service)...rather we assume most people have an amount of data that we can afford to backup.
Over the last couple years that we have offered the service we have received great writeups by TechCrunch, Ars Technica, Cnet, US News, and hundreds of other sites (»www.backblaze.com/news.html).
And if you are interested in learning how we can afford to offer this, a month ago we published our storage hardware design on our blog: »blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/pe···storage/.
We hope you enjoy the service! Gleb Budman CEO, Backblaze |

| reply to vrp I just read the blog on the servers... quite interesting how they take off the shelf components to build each storage system. Seems like they know what they are doing...
Interesting business model... will have to watch this one. -- "We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us.... We are far too easily pleased." C.S. Lewis |

| reply to vrp That is some amazing stuff there. I gotta admit I take back my comments and eat them along with my foot.
Awesome stuff there... And so much so I'm tempted to ask, where do I get one of these pods and will you ever make them commercially available? Such a thing would blow most JBOD, RAID, NAS, SAS units out of the water.
I know I'd be first on the purchasing list for some of this stuff -- Justin - DSLR resident grouch and Mr Negativity TSI Fanboy - "Dontchya wish your 'net was hot like mine! Ohhh Dontchya!" Have a nice day! |

| reply to vrp WOW, nice setup!!
Now, the ultimate question, while you do state that it is actually unlimited, what about bandwidth caps? Almost ALL online backup solutions start capping your upload and download speeds after you hit a certain number, do you? -- Images are Copyrighted and use is NOT permitted. |

| reply to vrp With that kind of scalability...
I doubt it. Do the math on it, and these guys have the scalability to basically do whatever they want provided they have the pipes to truck it in.
I've never seen anything as well done as this asides from Google's own server builds... and I dare compare them as following the same innovative footsteps.
I'm seriously asking (hopefully they check this post again) if these pods are commercially available. Similar to the Google appliances, these pods could have a massive use. -- Justin - DSLR resident grouch and Mr Negativity TSI Fanboy - "Dontchya wish your 'net was hot like mine! Ohhh Dontchya!" 1 edit | reply to vrp quote: Please note that because were not selling the design or the storage pods themselves, we provide no support nor warranties.
They mentioned in that blog post that they will not sell the units and have provided all the info for you to build your own. |

| reply to vrp I've been using backblaze for a couple months and currently have about 38GB of data with them. VERY happy with the service, although I've only done some test restores and haven't actually "needed" their service yet - but I like knowing it's there and sucking my files over automatically.
The client is geared towards the non-techie, as it defaults to pulling over most of your directories, so it takes a little time to tweak it by excluding directories you don't want to backup. (ex: I don't need to backup anything in the windows My Games folder) It would be great if they made an "advanced" version of the client where it starts by backing up nothing and you specifically tell it which folders to backup - instead of telling it what to NOT backup - but for the price and the fact it's automatic (and they store changed files) - I couldn't be happier with it.
