Have the major manufacturers stopped?

Guys, I've been wondering this for at least a year now:

Do the major manufacturers of desktops now use ONLY ATX, common standard power supplies, or are some of them still proprietary? What about the screw layout for mainboards?

I would think by now they might realize it is smarter to do things that way, because it would mean more sales and happier consumers...

I can't say anything about screw placements on store-bought desktop machines or anyone else other than HP, but HP desktops all use standard power supplies. No secret power connectors.

I haven't messed with the motherboard, but I installed a new power supply in my sons Compaq with no problem. I then took his original power supply and installed it in an old Antec server case, plugged into an ancient ECS motherboard that's running an AMD Athlon 1800+ CPU.

Yep, and they didn't use to do this before. I had an old Dell desktop (486/DX) that was the small form factor (had 4 slots sideways off a riser board). Power supply died & was able to use an ATX power supply from a different maker no problems!

Well there was ONE problem, the power supply was twice the height of the old one, so I couldn't put the case top back on!

dell is the only major MFG using proprietary parts. they use BTX mobos and cases which many or most MFGs abandoned years ago.

HP, in my experience working on their consumer Pavilion lines, is 100% standardized. Dell is by far the worst. If sony still makes Vaio desktops (towers) they are not far behind dell.

Dell has proprietary PSUs, tho the newer cases have screw holes for ATX. Sony has always had proprietary PSUs that arent even close to the same form factor as ATX, though i havent seen a viao desktop in a few years.

Um... I'm pretty sure AlienWare still uses special (OEM) MoBoards too...

Now, whether or not you consider them to be a "Major" player or not is up for discussion.

If the motherboard mounting holes are in the wrong place, I just drill new ones.

That's a great idea. Can you do it to a board for example?

Well - if Dell uses 'special' motherboards then it is a good bet a company they own does as well. Does not really matter how long ago it was.

As for the major player - they are part of a major player - moves up their playership in my humble opinion.
