STM-1 Router

We need a transparent STM-1 link.
Unfortunately Cisco routers are so expensive when bought new.

Do you guys know any sites we can purchase Cisco equipment refurbished or used for cheaper prices and that we can trust as well ?

PS. Even new Imagestream is so expensive for STM-1 so is not a choice I guess.

have you looked at alcatel lucent? they have routers that are very affordable compared to cisco. i wouldnt hesitate to use their gear, especially considering the major carriers in the usa use them for their backbone....

RAD has GigE to STM-1 bridges:

Around $3-4k list... Not sure if that is in your budget or not.

thanks guys. What would be the vital difference between AD-net products and RAD product ?

Anyone tried these before ? Which things I have to check while buying such kind of products ?

Actually we need a Ethernet 10/100/1000BaseT to STM-1 Electrical Converter.

Do you guys know any products ? I have found one but converts ETH to STM-1 Optical. We need electrical.

Unless there is an equivalent unit at the other end this wont work.

These RAD boxes will be encapsulating ethernet frames using GFP to transport them over an SDH/SONET network, and thus need a box to decapsulate them at the other end. If you are taking an STM1 from a provider for Internet connectivity, its likely they have their end plugged into a router, not a box that punts ethernet.

Unless the RAD is a router capable of terminating the STM1, it will not function as a single ended solution.

And anyway, I have some experience with the RAD boxes, and they are annoying pieces of crap. We recently discovered that they will only let you use 128mbit out of your STM1. Under the hood they break up your STM1 into a bunch of E1's, and youre limited to concatenating a total of 64 of them. So you lose about 22mbit of capacity.

Alcatel, Cisco, Juniper - and MANY others - all make routers capable of taking an STM1. And at least the 3 I mentioned will support MPLS cross connects, which are just as good, if not better, than any "magic box" that you can plug into your STM1 and have ethernet appear at either side.

I can make many recommendations for Cisco equipment as I am using several different Cisco router models to terminate STM1's in my network.

Juniper and Alcatel I am not so familiar with.

As for electrical vs optical, typically you can purcahse either an optical or electrical STM1 module to install into your gear to take the required physical carrier from your provider.

You should probably define expensive. Buying a new 7200 is expensive but a grey market 7200 with a three year warranty is generally not that expensive.

I've been buying used Cisco switches and routers from Network Hardware Resale ( networkhardware.com ) for years now and have had very good luck with them. Most of what they sell is refurbished/reconditioned and come with some kind of warranty.

A Cisco 1700 will barely route several mbit/sec, not to mention there is not a single POS interface available for that platform.

Therefore I am going to assume you are joking.

And I really hope you are joking...

And that is one such combination that I would recommend.

The 7200VXR's are extremely popular routers and there is a WIDE selection of interfaces and processor options available.

And they can be had quite cheap too.

An NPE-400 will do a bit, but not a lot, it might start to sweat once you start filling up an STM1, but it will be a great start in any sense, and youre pretty much guaranteed to be able to sell off the whole thing or any individual part when you upgrade or replace it.

I bought a 7206VXR with an NPE-400 and two PA-MC-T3 for $3100 with a 3 year warranty from a reseller yesterday. I would guess that the NPE-400/PA-POS config would be closer to $2000.

Channelised line cards are very expensive compared to non-channelised/clear channel.

The PA-MC-T3 is the most common card I buy which is naturally one of the more expensive. In the last two years the price has really dropped. I think two years ago we were paying $2000+ and now I am getting them for $750ish.

Thanks for the input.

We have ordered stm-1 converters below.

we will convert Eth-STM-1 Optical- STM-1 Electrical

There we will put the devices above. Do you guys recommend such a solution ?
