Re: Removing wallpaper

I just removed wallpaper in 5 rooms, using the "Downy" method, and it beats the heck out of using a steamer or scoring device, or anything else!

Basically, take about 2 gallons of warm water, add a good 1/2 cup of Downy fabric softener to the water and mix it in.

I use a spray bottle to then spray the mix on the wall, some folks prefer a sponge.

Let it soak about 15-20 minutes, and then take a thin, wide-blade (4-6 inch) putty knife and away it goes!

After you remove the paper, take just plain warm water and clean off any remaining glue residue, and you're done.

I was quite skeptical about it when given the method, but I can tell you its the way to go!
I second it, worked perfectly for me. Just make sure you keep the wallpaper wet, it tends to dry in few minutes.

Just make sure you remove 100% of the glue.
Sometimes it's easy to miss a little here and there.

If you paint over the glue it will eventually show through the paint.
Not if you prime with Zinsser BIN shellac based primer
Yeah but then you have to float over the glue to get the walls smooth again, and prime those patches as well after they're sanded. Much easier and cost effective to just wash the walls right after you remove the paper.

That's right.
Much easier to do it right in the first place.

Geez.....wallpaper is so 70ish..LOL.

The paint will look much, much better. Thats if the walls don't take too much abuse when peeling off the wallpaper.

I hope all goes well..:+)

I recently had wallpaper to remove from one of our bathrooms. The wallpaper had to have been up at least 25+ years because we bought the house over 20-years ago and I know that the people who lived here before us didn't do it.

I read all of the advice here, did some additional research on my own, and made a list of things I had to buy.

That night I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth and noticed that a corner of the wallpaper was pulled away from the wall. Figuring/hoping that I had nothing to lose, I started pulling it a bit...and then a little more. In less than 5 minutes I had all of the wallpaper down, all in full sheets---it probably could have been used again if someone wanted it.

The walls were sized and who ever did the wallpaper obviously knew what they were doing. My very un-expert advice is to check a corner to see if your wallpaper will come off easily. With some luck (maybe a lot of luck), you might not need anything special to get it down.
