Optical does have dropouts sometimes. Don't know the cause, but the easy fix is to use the RCAs. It's too bad that the box doesn't have an RCA digital output.

The audio sync after HD channel changes is caused by buffering. There's a tradeoff between fast channel changes and adequate buffering. The channel changes right away, but then it shows you the picture a little slow in order to get a few seconds behind the actual broadcast. This provides a few seconds of buffer.

you are right it is too bad that there is not coaxial digital output on these boxes. If I use the RCAs wont be able to decode DD as far optical sometimes having dropouts when I had BEV I NEVER had an issue with it like I do with this,it has dropped out 3 times in less than 5 minutes alone tonight,

I think it something strange in the audio stream (low bitrate, or something to do with compression, perhaps) and how it's handled by older receivers. I had a cheap Sony ~10 year old receiver that had the same problem. I ended up picking up a new receiver and the problem cleared up right away.

I still use the old one with a DVD player in the basement and it seems to work fine.

What about HDMI? If you have a TV with an HDMI input and a digital out, then you could use that. Otherwise, you'd need an amp that does HDMI switching and processes the audio.

Most newer TVs have switching built in and a digital/coax out to go to a decoder. This is how I hooked up the system at a friend's house and has been trouble free (to my knowledge.)

They don't use TTV though...

Just a thought, wondering if you have that capability.

It isn't officially supported, but it works fine most of the time. It's worth trying.

Most HDTVs have an optical out. The audio goes from the STB to the TV via HDMI, and then from the TV to the amp via optical. You wouldn't use the TV speakers for anything.

If that doesn't work, then you can try running the HDMI into your amp, if it has an HDMI input. IF the amp is capable (usually only higher end amps have HDMI audio processing.) You can continue to use your existing setup to run video to the TV, or use the amp for video switching.

The Optical cable you are using can sometimes be the cause of the "noise". This noise is called "jitter" it is caused by the receiver getting a second copy of the signal very shortly after the original signal is received. The cause of this jitter is because of a poor quality optical cable. Most of the cables that are under 50 dollars are going to be made of a plastic polymer such as Lexan, etc., not glass fiber. The cheaper cables (less than 20 bucks) are even worse as the ends of the fiber are scratched or dirty, chipped, etc. The best thing for a good quality audio system is to spend some money on a good quality cable (i.e. Monster brand). This is because they will typically use glass and ensure the ends are clean and polished.

I would like to point out that this is probably the only time would invest in a monster cable for the home entertainment centre, as most of the cables are just over-glorified lengths of copper.

once again I dont have cheap gear and that also means my cables,AND I WILL NOT PUT A MONSTER PRODUCT IN MY SYSTEM, I had the tech here again he heard (or didnt hear haha) the issues I am having (have also pvr recordings pick it up) IT IS NOT a cable problem it is a telus issue,He also said that telus is coming out with a new platform similiar to AT&Ts in the next few months and to just be paitent,my question was and still is why did this just start after their so called fix?
