Re: updated to 9.10

Awesome! Thanks a ton for the info! I'll keep my eyes peeled for Linux Crossfire support in the (hopefully near) future!

Damn! I kinda figured crossfire was the culprit.. that or ATi's lack of open sauce drivers despite claiming they have them... I'll keep using Windows 7 but I plan on adding a second HDD to my m17 and I'll use that to play around with Linux... I'm sure eventually it'll work somehow.
I'm not sure if you mentioned it in previous posts, but have you tried the latest 9.10 ATI drivers > »www.itrunsonlinux.com/news/119-a···iver-910

The link is at the bottom of the changelog. They seem to have made some progress with crossfire...

I will do the upgrade, this weekend. After reading all of the above, I think I will opt for the "dirty" upgrade instead of a clean install.

I have started my upgrade. The files are downloading very slowly - from 25 to 80 KB/sec on my 3 mbps connection. I guess the servers are overloaded.

I hope I didn't screw up. After the final update cycle to 9.04 was installed, it disabled my graphics driver, again (it almost always does, after every update - this is what I like least about Ubuntu). I just started the upgrade in low-res graphics mode. Knowing I would probably have to reinstall the video driver after the 9.10 upgrade, I didn't bother reinstalling it after the 9.04 updates.

I thought the same thing too, as well as having to redo wine and world of warcraft.. but it all carried over without a hitch.

I hope it does for you too.. good luck.

I finally solved the crappy performance with the open source ati driver with KDE on 9.10 for which updates just kept causing further regression. This was noticable with composite effects enabled. Create the AccelMethod Option under the Device section in xorg.conf and set it to XAA. It seems this version of KDE plays havoc with EXA acceleration(the default) due to it not be able to accelerate many bits in this version of KDE, from what I've read. This may work for you if you've been pleased with the video of full screen games, etc but KDE seemed atrociously slow. Now Karmic finally feels faster than Jaunty on the ATI/KDE machines. Hope this helps others.

Update: Enabling the EnablePageFlip option made things even faster with composite on. Fast enough for me to retry Adobe's flash on a hunch. It now performs well on 2 systems tested thus far. So my above post along with this option may be the answer to anyone who has Adobe issues. The second option I gave here is known to be unstable with certain cards, so use with caution. You can always recover from recovery mode if necessary. At root shell:
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

then remove the offending line.

The 9.10 upgrade killed my PC. Everything worked fine all the way through the upgrade process. Then, I restarted the PC when instructed. It booted up to the point of a text "login:" message on a screen that was flickering very badly. It would not accept all of my keystrokes, so it was impossible to enter the correct password.

I powered the PC down for a minute, then restarted again. It did the same thing.

Ooof.

Well, lets see if the logs tell us something.

It sounds like it might be an X thing,
Whats the last dozen or so lines of your Xorg log?

if you can get to a "stable" virt. terminal, (Try CTRL+ALT+F2, or F3)

type

That might give some info..

I think there is some hope for you, but that could evolve into another thread. X is a very common component to crash on someone from upgrades or misconfiguration. However, it only handles the display. It is not the heart of your system. It can usually be repaired from Linux itself from recovery mode.

Anyways, I solved my very last quirk and can now call my main install perfect. epsxe is now running like a champ. For those interested, there were 2 hitches. Karmic doesn't like the upx packed archive for some reason and gave me one of the most frustrating errors I've seen in Linux, just saying killed in terminal after launch with no info. The other is the fact Karmic uses libgtk-2.0, which does produce a verbose error once the first dumb error is solved(took me awhile because "killed" does not give me much to go on).

Solution:
Download libglib1.2 »packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libglib1.2ldbl and libgtk1.2 »packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libgtk1.2 for Jaunty. Stuff them aside in a new directory for now.

Run this in a terminal.
sudo apt-get install upx-ucl
cd /path/to/epsxe-executable
upx -d epsxe

This will unpack the upx executable and stop the annoying "killed" error. You will probably now see verbose errors about libgtk, etc. The first part is thanks to the awesome forums Ubuntu has. Now to the second part(or the rest of it). We are now going to provide libgtk1.2 libraries without making them the system default. So, we're not really installing them perse.

Run in terminal:
cd /path/to/downloaded/debs
dpkg -x libglib1.2ldbl_1.2.10-19build1_i386.deb .
dpkg -x libgtk1.2_1.2.10-18.1build2_i386.deb .
cd usr/lib
sudo cp * /usr/lib

Now epsxe should run flawlessly. Figured I would show this due to it being related to lib upgrades in Karmic and knowing some people love their emulation. pcsx-df runs flawless with no modification, but epsxe has always been better =)

OOF. UPX causes a null pointer dereference in the kernel. Yikes, bug :)

I think im going to keep 9.04 on my older p4 2.4g system(im still debating this though). I think I might wait a little bit before I upgrade my main system to 9.10.

Since 9.04 broke some things on my HP HDX18 laptop, I did a clean install on it. So far I like it and everything except for the built in webcam seems to be working. It appears to be faster and the fonts seems to be better looking. On my desktop I tried an upgrade but the repository couldn't be found. I'll work on that later.

Ouch. That is kind of funny. I didn't see any kernel error. maybe it only applies in a particular circumstance. Being a developer, I'm sure you already got it solved LOL. Seems to be mentioning apparmor, though I can't tell if it could be the culprit from the limited info. Did you try sudo aa-complain /path/to/epsxe just for the heck of it?

Have any of you tried changing the brightness of your netbook's LCD on Karmic using the Fn keys?

If I try this on my MSI Wind, it goes insane, flickering the screen like it's having a seizure, until I click the "Applications" button. This only happens on an X server screen, not when I am in a virtual terminal, such as CTRL + ATL + F1.

I tried adding the "nomodeset" kernel parameter, according to a comment in the bug report, but it made no difference.

This might be an exclusive MSI Wind issue, and other netbook users might be safe.
