| updated to 9.10
I ran the update manager, it told me there was a new distro out. So I went ahead and installed it "dirty". Meaning I didn't wipe my hard drive and go fresh install.
I was expecting world of warcraft not to work. I was right in part. The launcher wont run, but the exe did. I was able to patch it and get to the log on screen. To go further I'll need some game time.
Over all it took about 3 hours. I ate dinner and went to the grocery store. By the time I came back had a about an hour left.
I'm impressed that the upgrade was that painless. It appears to have kept my settings from 9.04. -- A is A. |

| reply to Snakeoil I had just installed the latest version of Ubuntu the day before, so instead of waiting 4 hours to do an upgrade I simply spent 20 minutes downloading the iso and did a wipe and install.
I am loving it. -- Sarcasm, confusing stupid people since 1869 |

I decided to roll the dice and it worked fine. -- A is A. |

1 edit | reply to Snakeoil Upgraded 1 pc a couple weeks ago and 1 a few days ago. The first to upgrade had a plethora of issues. I corrected most of them the first day. The rest seemed ironed out by updates. The 2nd pc only had 1 very small issue hardly worth mentioning. It was fixed within a half hour. All in all, both machines have been running very stable and fast. No complaints here. Hats off to the Ubuntu team for another good release and relatively pain-free(we are Linux users, after all :P ).
Edit: In case it wasn't clear, both machines were upgraded from 9.04 over the internet, since that sometimes makes for a notable difference in experience, as the installation goes. |

That's one reason it's good to have a sources.list of redundant mirrors. My upgrade was blazing fast, because the first choice in my list is less than 100 miles away. They should generally be placed in order of speed, as mirrors go(My list has 4 mirrors for each repository). us.archive.ubuntu.com gets slammed a fair deal when everyone is upgrading. I can upload my sources.list if anyone is interested, though it does include a few ppas. |

| There we go. I need to put the wine repo back in there. It was timing out during my upgrade, so I killed it until I got Karmic setup the way I want. |

| reply to Snakeoil Just got finished with the upgrade to 9.10 UNR, only have a few minutes to poke around before I shut 'er down and take 'er home, but Sound works (Mic works now, Never worked before...)
Looks like settings all pretty much stayed the same, the new clutter desktop is different, but not to shabby.
Will post more when I have a chance to wring it out a bit better.
So far, a really smooth transition.

| reply to Snakeoil only problem so far is flash seems to be crashing more then before.
I play evony, before there was no flickering, now there is. I use Facebook and the apps. Before running an app caused Evony to "crash" and my streaming radio to turn off. Now it causes Firefox to crash. Runs ok as long as I don't use Facebook apps. -- A is A. |

| reply to Snakeoil I'm building a new server, Core i7 w/8gb ram (yummy!), and put 9.04 -x64 on it first... then did the new distro upgrade and it went fine.
Running the alpha 64bit flash from adobe works great, if that helps
It all looks pretty good to me. Not wildly different then 9.04. This is my first 64 bit version, so far so good, but I have not cut over my current server to this replacement yet - still building. -- My place : »www.schettino.us |

| The under the hood changes (eglibc 2.10; Upstart+sreadahead booting, gdm started ASAP, ...) are pretty remarkably major in 9.10; perhaps Ubuntu's most significant release since the GCC 4.0 transition in Breezy years ago. -- Ubuntu MOTU Developer and Forums Council |

| reply to Snakeoil I have upgraded four systems now. Only minor problems on one laptop (dead keys became enabled by default which was annoying because the apostrophe key stopped working).
I am impressed by several things:
The video drivers work a lot better. I have laptops with both intel and ati cards and they are working much more smoothly and with MUCH higher 3d framerates.
The boot up and shutdown times are much better.
The theming is more professional looking than 9.04
One great thing about open source software is that with the occasional exception of a regression the software keeps getting less and less buggy with time. A lot of the apps I use are at version 1.0 and above now and are really very stable. Oh and they're free too.
Congratulations to the developers. Its great to have one (jdong) here in the thread. -- "As we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously" Benjamin Franklin declining a patent on the first slow combustion stove |

| reply to Snakeoil Oh yes! Netbook users and other Intel GMA users REJOICE! Finally Xorg performance is back to Hardy levels... and maybe even beyond
And for netbook users still on Hardy, consider moving up to Karmic. The toolchain and other updates to the entire distribution in the meantime has yielded an appreciably faster desktop experience. -- Ubuntu MOTU Developer and Forums Council |

| reply to Snakeoil I did the final RC last week - wondering if I will need to do another 'dirty' install or will it be just an update?
My 9.04, btw, never read my memory card - this one does, so I am happy. Although I just can't do a P&P - it has to be booted.
Nice looking system too. They have come a long way,. -- This message was composed using 100% post-consumer recycled electrons, please recycle responsibly. Composed and sent with Mac OS X... because windows sucks. Public PGP Key available. Opinions expressed are entirely my own.

| +1 on that. I also keep a separate partition with the development version and boot it every few days and upgrade it. That way you get a very good idea on your system what is new and also what bugs need to be reported. I have done that now since early 2005 and a lot of serious bugs were sorted out before release. -- "As we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously" Benjamin Franklin declining a patent on the first slow combustion stove |
