[Rant] Damn TV hiatus

Why is it networks like to take 1-2 weeks breaks in the middle of a season and air re-runs? It pisses me off.

It's getting impossible to track when a show will air a new episode and when to expect a re-run. Why can't they just air 12 episodes or half the season, take a break of 6 weeks or something, then air the rest, back to back, no hassle or anything?

I understand why there is a break during the holiday - many people are enjoying the break, or on a trip, and the super important ratings would be lower, but why right now? There's nothing happening that is special.

The execs of the major networks can be real morons. Either canceling perfectly good shows or putting them in a terrible timeslot so they can claim the ratings are low later, or air garbage.

I mean even premium channels like HBO (which we pay for ON TOP of the already hefty cable bill) don't even air back-to-back without interruptions...

In a sense, isn't this counter productive? If people keep busting their nose to re-runs they'll stop bothering watching it live, program it on the DVR, and skip the ads anyway!

I used to record and skip ads, now don't even bother to record as there is not much on I want to see and not sure when the shows are. Most of the time if I want to see anything at all it is on Hulu, or a similar service.

I agree random weeks with no new shows are lame, especially when you don't know it until show time.

As far as knowing, Wikipedia has episode lists for just about every show that include 'Original airdate' and usually go a few episodes into the future. For example, we can look there (after we got stoked for Sunday night >:( ) to see that there were weren't new episodes of The Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad last Sunday October 25th, and there won't be on Nov 1st either with new episodes starting again on the 8th.

I've been using TV.com lately, it's still a pain to check for each show. I'm a very busy person but on Sundays when I cook and clean all day (I usually do all the weekly chores in one day, since it's the only time I'm free) I have like 9 hours of work to do, watching TV makes it a bit more interesting, so I follow about 9 shows currently, and watch episodes back to back.

Rarely when I am home I do like to enjoy one hour of lazy relaxing in front of a good show... and tonight I was deprived of that pleasure

I stopped paying for cable long ago..you just can't justify $100 a month for this crap.

eztv.it is my source now.

They're laboring under the misconception that anyone gives a good damn about the World Series.

They want to get more advertising revenue by spacing out the popular shows over longer periods.

But what do they get when people aren't tuning in for repeats.
if i don't see "NEW" on the program guide, i'll look at what other stations offer.

when torrent can get the show hours* or days in advance and auto download via RSS feeds

*depending on time zone

In a way it don't bother me to much. I got over 60 hrs of programming on my TiVo. I might be able to catch up now.

What pisses me off the most about all networks is that they change the schedule for holidays. Geez, no chance anyone would want to see the normal programming they usually miss? Guess not. Instead most channels run 24 hours of idiotic "Z-movies" that few watch.

They add in breaks for things like..... The World Series currently, as most of the major 4 do not want to compete against it. Same with a lot of the football playoffs. A number of the non 4 major (regular) networks will still run their regular programming - FoodTv, Discover along with others...

Between that and not having enough episodes to go thru the entire season (which has been lengthened) - there are breaks.

Which is funny because things like the world series don't exactly get great ratings to begin with (Last year was something like 17-18% overall for the entire series).

Has a lot to do with demographics - if the Series pulls the age groups the shows want - then they won't try and compete.

Even that doesn't stop it! I wouldn't mind the Christmas specials, if they showed the good ones from our childhood or the old classics like A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim. And what is with that one station running A Christmas Story for 24 hours every year??
