[General] Can't get EVDO consistently with USB760

Network Connection Tab
Anyone know why I rarely get an EVDO connection when my modem never moves? Can it be the USB extension cable? I move that frequently, but not the modem.

I am using the latest software for windows 7 [see attached] and rarely get EV-RevA, however I can almost always get 5 bars for 1xRTT.

Any clues?

Another question: I'm using the same modem on my MacBook Pro and never see an EVDO connection option - is that normal?

I've also noticed that there were different software versions available from Verizon Wireless and Smith Micro - is that normal as well???

Many thanks in advance,

Rick

I find that my USB760 is a much better performer when I use an inexpensive ($40) external antenna hooked up to it.

I was told that there was no cheap antenna for this unit.

Can you please show me what you're talking about?

[Maybe a URL?]

There are places where I can only get two bars and an antenna might help in those places as well.

I talked with the folks at C.Crane Company [they started out selling powerful AM radio antennas and are friends of the family] and they said the same - no such antenna exists for this modem.

Many thanks,

There are lots of antenna options. It has an RF port . You can hook any antenna to it. You have received bad advice

Looks like my thank you post didn't go through.

So, thanks again - I stand happily corrected.

Still wondering if it is signal strength [alone] that prevents/allows an EVDO connection as I am usually without it.

Any thoughts?

Signal strength is very important to a good evdo connection. You need a good connection to get top upload and download speeds and lowest latency . Ideal connection occurs between -65 and -75.
Anything below -85 , you should seek help for sure.

You need more than an antenna , You need an amplifier kit. You need serious amount of gain . See Jim's review

Thanks much for the suggestion. Looks like I'm going to have to research this a bit more. I will need something easy to pack and set-up at various locations with my MacBook Pro.

CA819 Kit is really portable, even comes with a carrying case to put everything in.

Thanks Max,

That kit looks nice, but it also looks like it's for a car. I'm looking for something that I could throw in my Laptop case and set up in my office, a hotel room, or friends house, etc.

BTW, someone has it on ebay for 119.00

Kit includes an ac adapter .So you can use in a home. Kit on Ebay is used and is over 3 years old , I can tell by the power cable attached . Cyfre has not used the red & black power cables in over 3 years. Also includes a weak glass mount antenna , We include a great 5 DB mag mount. If you like the price go for it . It is an older generation and from an unauthorized dealer so you get no warranty

Hi Max,

didn't mean to imply I was going to buy that eBay unit, only that the pix made it look much more like a rig for auto use, especially with those connector pins.

I hate it when I'm not articulate - my bad...

I don't know the first thing about Mobile Broadband except that I bought the USB760 unit from Verizon simply because Verizon own's this area [very out of character for me]. Until this thread, I thought a Yagi was a large animal that lived in Nepal. Boosters, mounts, gain, dual band, grounding - It's all way beyond me right now.

I'm an old PC geek that retired to the country and it seems that school never lets out. No complaints here - its a healthy exorcize. I like to be informed about my purchases and know that I'm buying what will work best for what I need.

I greatly appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Rick

Yes.... but you don't wanna go broke doing it either...

Just because something is old, doesn't mean it's worth or performs less than the "New and Improved"....

Proper planning and setup will ALWAYS beat a NEWLY named product!!!!

BTW: It's also a good idea to white out ESNs in pics.

Thanks for the ESN info - see, I have no clue about this stuff.

I appreciate your concern about $$$ and it would normally be a big factor, but life has taken me down an interesting road this last year and spending some money on myself is a very good thing right now.

I will be getting the new gear soon, but will be out of town when it gets here. So, sometime late next week or the week after, I'll post back with some results.

BTW - here's the speed test I ran with just the USB unit.

Make sure antenna is mounted perpendicular to ground on at least an 8 inch by 8 inch metal surface ( not aluminum or Stainless Steel ) It is ideal if you can put antenna outside.
