Another one in the related column. School would've been much easier if I had youtube videos instead of teachers.. LOL. |

Say you're 40 and you're in love with a girl who is 10. You're 4x older than she is, but you can't marry a 10 year old... So you wait 5 years. Now you're 45 and she's 15. You're only 3x as old as she is now... Suppose you wait another 15 years: you're now 60 and she's 30. It's not so bad as you're only twice as old as she is. The question is: How long would you have to wait until you're the same age? LOL! |

2 edits | reply to dolphins Here's what they're teaching my kids this year:
256 300 x 70 = 21,000 x 67 (ans will be in 10,000s) --------- 12000 60 x 200 3000 60 x 50 360 60 x 6 1400 7 x 200 350 7 x 50 + 42 7 x 6 ---------- 17152
How the hell is that easier or faster than:
256 x67 ---------- 1792 +15360 ---------- 17152

| 5th. It's called Everyday Math. The thinking is that since we read from left to right, we should also do math that way. We haven't spoken to any other teachers, but my daughter's is not happy with it herself. Just as bad, the district has had something like half a dozen workshops for parents to help the learn it. Like that's the kind of nonsense my tax dollars need to be paying for. In light of all that, it's time to start moving this up the line. |

| Ahhh... I've heard bad things about Everyday Math. Like you have to later go and learn the right way to do math.
40 years ago, we had "the new math" which taught us a lousy way to divide. It had so many steps, it increased the chances of making mistakes and getting the wrong answer. (But you supposedly "understood" the process of division.)
When I started 6th grade, the first thing the teacher said was, "I don't know how they taught you to divide, but this is the way we're going to do it," and showed us the proper way to do division. -- It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice. |

| reply to dolphins When my son was in high school I had a few disagreements with his teachers. In a few cases the teachers just were not qualified to teach in my opinion at least not advanced students. They tried to force their ideals on him instead of teaching. -- Prevent Malware |
