[CATV] MLB hitting up fans to contact Insight to get MLB Network

Click for full size
I just got an email from MLB asking Insight customers to contact Insight and ask them to add MLB Network to their channel lineup. Wilner has already commented on MLB Network and how they have simply been unable to come to terms with them. Interesting the new tactic that MLB is apparently now taking...

I love this....I really hope this goes somewhere. I have called and sent a letter through MLB Network's website to Insight. I really have no idea if this helps, but I would love to have this station. Hopefully Insight and the MLB Network can figure something out over the off season. The sooner the better.

Now we will have to see if Mr. Wilner and this team can work something out. I have high hopes since MLB sent this out to Insight customers that maybe they are talking or have been talking. The only fear that I have is that Insight will sign a contract with them but only put it in Columbus OH market. We all know that Columbus always gets all the channels and that some of the markets (Louisville, Northern Kentucky, Evansville) do not get the same channels. Just look at the difference in HD channels in Columbus compared to Insight's other markets. That is the other concern that I have, is that they will only get the SD channel and not the HD channel. This would be on the the best networks to carry in HD because everything is filmed in HD and all of the games that they carry are in HD.

Please Insight would you please sign this network up along with The Golf Channel. Then I would not have to consider moving to another provider.

The MLB Network is certainly not high on the list of stations I'd like to see added. Viewership of baseball is declining every year and fewer and fewer games are being televised because of this fact. Maybe they should pick up a network whose fan base is actually growing like the NHL!

Msradell what are you talking about when you say that fewer and fewer games are being televised. Every team in the MLB has a regional sports network that covers 140 to 162 games a year. I think you are truly mistaken when you say that viewership is declining so fast. If that was the case then there would not be all of these games televised.

As with NHL, I think you have a case with the Columbus market since they have a NHL team there. But overall I do not think you have a case at all. Insight is in the Midwest, the heart of baseball. Between, Northern Kentucky, Louisville, and Evansville you have a huge baseball base. With Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati is right across the river. In Louisville the Louisville Bats are the Triple A farm team for the Cincinnati Reds and almost every game is sold out. As for Evansville, that is BIG St. Louis Cardinals territory. MLB Network knows what they are doing when they sent out this e-mail. Insight serves areas that would be a huge viewership market for them. And by the way TW in Columbus already has the channel. Competition is key my friend.

I was specifically referring to the networks which used to carry several games every Saturday and all only playoff and World Series games. But after your comments I did some research and found that not only is viewership declining on the networks but it's also declining on most of the regional channels. You can look it up yourself, even the viewership of FSN Ohio declined between 2007 and 2008 (2009 data is not yet available).

On the other hand the articles you can find about NHL viewership all show that it is increasing.

If you don't believe my information, research the facts yourself.

No offense, but I'd say the only reason that NHL viewship is growing is because it dropped so dramatically after the strike. Also, I'd have to think that NHL viewship was much, much higher when it was broadcasting regularly on ESPN.

Regardless, I'd love to get the MLB Network, but I'm not holding my breath. How long has the NBA Network been around without an Insight addition (then again, the NBA is nowhere near what it used to be IMO; I'm not really missing that network at all anymore...).

Have you looked at the Roku player and getting the MLB Premium?

I just ordered my Roku for Netflix so I don't have to play it through my noisy XBox 360.

Roku is probably your best bet. Any cable company that wants the MLB Network must also offer Extra Innings as per the contract with MLB, so it's unlikely Insight will be adding it anytime soon.
