1 edit | [WIN7] Windows 7 and Seagate DiscWizard
Anyone tried Seagate DiscWizard (basic Acronis TI) with Windows 7? Or, do you know if it works?
The latest full version of Acronis I have is v10 (yeah, I know, pretty old), but it works great on my Vista Machines....(in fact, I have a fully updated image of my Vista installation just in case).
But I'd like to image my fresh install of Win 7.
The Seagate site only says up to Vista (I believe they're up to v11 somthin' or other), but I'm just wondering if anyone has tried.
Thanks. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

| lol...I may, although I'm expecting the entire "fam" here soon (some from out of state), so I have a feeling I won't get to "play" much until after the weekend. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

| The only thing I plan on impressing them with this weekend, is how well I can lock myself in my bedroom and hide in the closet...especially when we're talking about two Daughters, one Son (plus girlfriend), one Son-in-law, and maybe even a total of 5 Dogs!
Lord...someone please shoot me and put me out of my misery.
If I don't make it through the weekend AB, I'll inform my wife that I want you to have one of my Computers. (Not to worry my friend...I'll tell her to give you one of the XP Machines). -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

| reply to jabarnut The 5 dogs sound like fun!
Acronis claims that the current version of True Image Home, 2010, is the only one supported under Win 7. Some people have claimed that they got 2009 to work, but it's definitely not supported.
I have both V10 and 2010 and frankly I don't like 2010; it is reputed to have bugs, and I have a few other odd little niggly problems with it. V10 was tried and true and it's still the one I'm most comfortable with.
For the moment I'm using standalone V10 under BartPE to do backups and restores of Win7, and an installed version of 2010 for backup archive browsing.
I honestly don't remember if I ever tried installing V10 under Windows 7, but it installs all kinds of weird drivers and services and is reputed not to work, so I don't think it's even worth trying. Even if it appeared to work, after what I've read about non-support I wouldn't trust it. -- "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" -- a corollary of Murphy's Law "A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

| Thanks for the reply Wolfie..yeah, this is something I'll definitely have to look into, in the near future.
For now, I'm headed for the closet and may not be on my Computer again for a while.
Wish me luck...(believe me, If you had ever been around here for this total chaos before, you'd know I need it). -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

| Hi,
Is Win 7 home like XP home where the backup program is not loaded? You have to install it yourself.
But that was XP Home... Tested Win7 beta/RC, I am going to stay with XP till SP1 comes out for Win 7.

| There is no "Win 7 Home" -- there is Win 7 Starter (OEM only, for netbooks), Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate. All versions have Windows Backup, as well as System Protection which is like the old System Restore plus file protection, where user files that are deleted or changed can be restored to previous versions.
Windows Backup is probably a viable option if you have nothing else -- it supports image backups, incremental backups, and can restore one or selected groups of files. It can also do bare-metal restores using either a system repair CD that you create, or the original Windows boot DVD. But overall I don't think it's as flexible as a decent 3rd party backup tool. And who knows what bugs it may have -- I have only ever used it to create one test backup image. -- "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" -- a corollary of Murphy's Law "A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

| reply to jabarnut FWIW Paragon Drive Backup Express 9.0 (free version) works on the RC 64 bit. I haven't tried to install it on my 7 Pro box but I'm sure it will work. Also, the backup utility within windows seems to work well. I created an image and a restore CD and used them to restore another RC box that I hosed. (accidentally on purpose ) |

| I hate to say it, because Acronis V.10 has been like a faithful friend all these years, but with a few of the later versions and now especially with some of the reported issues with 2010, some folks feel that it's time to move on to a different product. It's hard to disagree. ATI was once regarded as the premier backup product, and many think it has lost that luster.
If Microsoft wasn't so famous for churning out underperforming, crap buggy applications (let's be honest here, folks! ) I would more seriously consider the built-in Windows 7 backup option. It worked fine on my laptop, but when we went to try to do a "system image backup" on the desktop computer, Windows backup, by default, selected every HDD it could see, and then claimed that the external drive didn't have the required multiple terabytes of space! There's a way to force it to just select the system drive (which is what you'd think "SYSTEM image backup would mean!), but it's that kind of bad-design bullshit that annoys me. -- "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" -- a corollary of Murphy's Law "A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

I would agree with your summation about previous Windoze backup utilities but the one in 7 is mucho improved. Asked which drive I wanted to back up and where to store the back up and voila, done. It even restored when asked. Just my $.02 -- If you can read this thank a teacher. If you can read this in English thank a vet.

4 edits | reply to jabarnut Sorry to resurrect a slightly old thread, but I wanted everyone to know that Seagate DiscWizard does indeed work fine with Windows 7. (The present version on the Seagate site is v11.0.8142). So, if you have either a Seagate or Maxtor Drive, you're good to go.
After I came out of my hiding in the closet, I successfully backed up a full image of Windows 7 Home Premium, and then restored it again.
And yeah, if you've followed my other topic about how I went back to Vista Ultimate....well, that's certainly true.
But now, I've got a good Image of a fresh Windows 7 Home Premium install, when I want to go back and play around again! (And, um, as a matter of fact...that's what I'm doing right now).
Many thanks to all who responded, as well as people who sent me IM's concerning this topic. (You know who you are).
Oh, and AB ...I'm really sorry I somehow survived the weekend (believe me, it wasn't easy), but next time I have a family gathering...(and perhaps don't survive the next one), I promise you'll still get one of my XP machines.

(Editsalajabarnut) Oh, and by the way...if I'm such a moron that I need to edit my post 4 times or more, I am required to add my "bonehead trademark". (Seen above).
This is a specific requirement for only me (as stated by the jabarnut site rules). The beauty of this, of course, is that after I've edited my post at least 4 times, I can just keep on editing and you'll hardly even know I've added more edits. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |
