Westell 7500 Diagnostics data

I was using a Westell modem 6100 when the tech support told me that Transceiver margin needs to be 10+ to be stable. He puts in a splitter to separate DSL from phone signal. Later, they said it was my old router interfere with Westell 6100, causing internet connection to drop (avg a few times per day).

They replaced both Westell 6100 and my old router with a Westell 7500. So far it has been ok (less than a day). However, I found the transceiver information on:
»192.168.200.1/htmlV_Generic/main···rans.asp
which shows: margin as 6.6.

Does anyone know they are same things (am I comparing apple to apple)? Will I be ok with these data, or am I in for trouble, that it will be unstable and dropping connection like before?

thanks,

Your main problem is a high attenuation. That means that you are a long way from the telco facility, and the signal that gets to you can be a bit weak.

When the signal is weak, then any electrical noise can cause problems. Whether your router was the cause of the problems, I do not know. But at that attenuation there are many possible sources of interference.

Sorry, I don't exactly know what the High Attenuation and Margin/Line Attenuation/Transmit Power in Transceiver Stat report means. All I know is when the Tech Support person came out to my house, before he put in the splitter to separte phone and DSL signals, he measured the signal, and said the reading was 13 at the phone box, just outside of my house, but inside the house at the modem (Westell 6100), it was 8, and told me that it should be 10 or higher to be stable. After he put in the splitter at the phone box, he measured the signal at the modem again, and it did go up to 11 or so, and he thought the problem was fixed

Unfortunately, the internet connection continued to drop (a few times a day) after the phone/DSL splitter, so they suspected that it was my router interfered with the Westell 6100 modem, and asked me to repalce the 6100 and router with a Westell 7500 wireless modem.

So, I am worry and don't understand why the Margin reading is about 6.6 now. Why switching Westell 6100 modem and Netgear MR814 router to a single Westell 7500 wireless modem will make such difference in Margin reading? The internet connection seems to ok after the switch so far. But, am I in for trouble down the road? Should I try to get them to get the Margin reading back up to 10 plus?

Sorry, I don't exactly know what the High Attenuation and Margin/Line Attenuation/Transmit Power in Transceiver Stat report means.
The attenuation is the amount of energy lost between the telco site and your modem. Normally, 60 is about the limit for dsl service. So you are at the limit.

I had an attenuation of 58-59 db for several years, and still had reasonably reliable service. But occasionally there would be high electrical noise, probably from a neighbor's house, that would knock the connection down.

A margin of 6 is okay, though it would be nice to see a higher margin. It is when it drops down to 3 or 4 that you are likely to lose your internet connection.

When you are near the limit of what can be supported, differences can show up between modems. It is possible that the 6100 handled the weak signal a little better than the 7500.

The transmit power is the amount of energy sent down the line. That transmit power is normally negotiated when the modem synchs. A higher transmit power can overcome some of the noise and get a better noise margin. I think the transmit power can only go up to 16, so at 14.3 you are close to the limit.

When I was in a situation of high attenuation, I found it best to leave the modem powered on at all times. If the noise knocked my connection down, the modem would reconnect, but would negotiate a higher transmit power at that time. And usually that higher transmit power would keep my connection up during future high noise periods.

There isn't much I can suggest, beside leaving the modem powered on at all times. If your connection works better with the 6100, then you could consider going back to that. If the connection is working well enough as it is, then be happy with that. You might have occasional disconnections. As long as they are not too frequent, you can probably live with those.

Thank you for taking the time to explain what these terms are. It really help me, and I appreciate it.

Althought I still don't understand why switching from (Westell 6100 plus Netgear router) to a wireless Westell 7500 will make the reading worse (margin reading went down from 11 to 6.6 and line attenuation went up to 61). I would have thought those readings should solely depend on the distance from telco site to my modem, and has nothing to do with which modem I use.

However, the Westell 7500 without my old Netgear router seems to perform better (the internet connection did not drop last night), so I am cautiously happy. I will stay with it for now, and follow your advise to leave it on at all times.

I think it is a matter of accuracy.

My ISP can measure the attenuation at his end. My modem measures it at my end. The value for attenuation is different depending on where measured, and which modem I use (I have tried several).

I suggest you go with the one that works most reliably, and don't just depend on the numbers.
