| Cheap networked laser printer?
Does such a thing exist?
I need something that can talk lpd. It needs to print around a dozen pages a day and that's it.
In the past I would go straight to HP - I've seen a number of their printers go for more than 10 years, and my LJ 1200 at home has spit out about 15K pages since 2001 with no real issues besides toner replacement. But I have no idea if HP is still any good at the cheap end.
Oh, and postscript support would be nice as it would save me setting up ghostscript. Not a requirement though.

2 edits | reply to sporkme I have 3 lexmark E234s (discontinued model) and 2 E250DN's that I've been happy with. (and a few higher end optras)
The E250 meets your specs including postscript 3 emulation but it might be a bit steeper in price (lists at $249.00) than what you're thinking of. (it has duplex printing - a nice plus for a fairly inexpensive printer)

Lexmark also has the E120n which is quite a bit cheaper (lists at $149) in price. No postscript or duplex, but I believe it has everything else you require.

Not entirely sure if it would meet your needs but my experience with them in customer sites has been positive. -- How lucky am I to have known someone who is so hard to say good-bye to. |

| reply to sporkme Thanks all.
Considering the very low volume, I think that Brother fits the bill. It looks like they offer decent support for CUPS printing, so I'm set. The toner cartridges are actually pretty reasonable for a cheap printer as well... -- with every mistake we must surely be learning |

| reply to sporkme OfficeMax has Brother brand printers at huge discounts. It started last weekend but may still be in effect. They had a Brother network laser for $80.
I've used several Brother printers in my store for the past few years and they've been excellent. -- John M - Cranky network guy |

1 edit | reply to sporkme Beware, Brother printers are slightly cheaper but the drum is a replacement part on many models and isn't cheap at all... If you're willing to refill go with HP, I normally get 3 refills per cartridge before the drum goes bad, each refill costs me ~$10. I've managed Brother and HP, I'll take a HP over a Brother in a heartbeat. |

| reply to sporkme I've owned, and supported Brother, HP, and Lexmark - I'd avoid Brother for one reason - cost of consumables...
The HP and Lexmark may be a little higher up-front, but over a fairly short run (maybe two toners) - the Brother ends up more expensive...
I've got a Lexmark e260dn right here beside me right now, and have been very happy with it, speed's good; network support is excellent, and toner life's been good as well. Not as familar with the new HP offerings (I used to work as an HP tech, but that was back in the LJ4 days) - they have always made a good product, in my mind... |

| said by LazMan :I've owned, and supported Brother, HP, and Lexmark - I'd avoid Brother for one reason - cost of consumables... Toner for this one is a bit less than my small HP - $48. At around 4300 pages/year I think we'll be fine. All this thing is doing is printing invoices every night at midnight.
We've were using the main office printer (HP 4MPlus), but the it's gone screwy in the past few months. Every few days it just stops taking print jobs until it's rebooted. Drives the billing people nuts. Firmware is up to date, telnet interface and snmp are available when it's "hung". It just won't accept stuff into the queue for whatever reason. Socket is open, but it never acks the data.
They got many years out of it though. -- with every mistake we must surely be learning |

I like HP when buying a printer. A few months back, i bought the HP 3600n color laser for home and it works great. I bought mine at Fry's Electronics though, not Amazon.

At $89 if it they only get a few months out of it, no harm done. I'll pitch the cheapest networked HP at that point... -- with every mistake we must surely be learning |

| reply to sporkme I bought a Samsung CLP-315W laser for $160 off Newegg. It's fantastic. It has USB, ethernet, AND wireless b/g....and it prints in color. It will definitely be able to do a dozen pages a day...its says max load is 20,000/month.
WOW - unfortunately the price is up to $250 now. I must have really got a good deal: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···28112121 -- »www.speedtest.net/result/598063272.png |
