Hey there, MLG... Just curious if you can give me a few pointers on using this router properly. Here is what I have:

2 Alienware gaming laptops (wife and myself) running vista 32 and playing primarily WoW, connecting wirelessly.
xbox 360 (my son) for his online gaming, also wireless.

We have comcast highspeed internet currently, and I just recently updated the firmware on the router to the latest. I believe it is the 1.21.

I have NOT set up any gaming priority yet since the firmware update, but I'm hesitant to do so until I understand it fully. The way I understand it is only one computer (IP address) can have the World of Warcraft pre-set port forwarding settings assigned to it. At least I don't think it's possible for more than one, but therein lies my problem.

Both my wife and I play WoW simultaneously, and my son will be upstairs playing xbox live. Recently, we have been getting randomly disconnected from the internet (not the router, as it still shows us being connected to it, just "Local" and not "Local and Internet". After a few moments, we are all back up and running, only to have it occur again a few minutes later. Being a fellow WoW player, you understand the issues this can cause in raids and such. How can I make the three devices work harmoniously and at optimal performance?
Well you have to use WPA2 Only and TKIP Security which I've just discoverd, and wireless clients don't seem to disconnect anymore, ever.
Use G and N only for wireless, probably use channel 11 for less interferance, and lock in a wireless speed, I use 36 I believe, you could use 54 if needs be.
The biggest thing is the security being WPA2 though, that should stop the random disconnects.

I turn SPI off, and use Endpoint Independent for UDP & TCP, that should cure any connection issues.

Well since I was screwed over months ago by upgrading to this crap lets see what this firmware has to offer. It used to shut down from 2 to 6 days depending on how much I used it. I found some settings where it doesn't shut down at all but it should work no matter what settings are put in so I am testing it out and using my connection a nice amount to stress it a bit.

Turned gamerfuel off and WISH off again last night, this morning my wireless clients had no internet. Turned gamerfuel and WISH back on, now wireless is totally fine.

I still feel as though the firmware only likes certain settings, but when you have those settings there's no need to change anything. Its trial and error at this point, but I believe the setting I have now are about as good as I can get and without the router doing wierd things.

Im going to keep these settings for about 3 days, if my wired and wireless connections are stable I list my settings.

I really wish d-link would fix the settings that make the router fall apart though, so far wireless with no secuirity is terrible, and it appears that gamerfuel and WISH have to be on for some reason.
Some of you may be getting different results so I'd like to here what settings are working for everybody else.

Blunted it appears that this firmware will fix your 2-6 day lockup issues but you aren't gonna be too happy with wireless performance at all.

Well if you think about it they spent the first 5 months in total denial that a problem even existed. This company exists router to router...they create one piece of garbage, sell the hell out of it until the complaints start coming in, retire it (and all the warranty issues) and release the same garbage all over again with a few changes under a new product title.

If you sit down and calculate the time out it's been what about 3 years since the dgl-4500 was first announced...its life is over in technical terms. They've learned they can drag things out just long enough to exceed the warranty coverage and then the life cycle of the product. What they hope for is that the problems don't explode into something like this affecting thousands of people. So long as they don't have a disaster like this during the life cycle they still make money.

The sick part about this is that people still keep coming back for more despite the countless thousands of complaint posts about this company. Everywhere you look there are complaints about this dlink model or that dlink model and it almost always revolves around firmware. You would think people would start paying attention and stop buying the product.

Now your issues still exist. My question is have you followed the advice I posted in the other thread on this site and filed your BBB complaint? If not...why not? Get your money back and get yourself a product that works and is properly supported. They broke your router, they obviously can't fix it in a reasonable period of time and they are obligated to either REPLACE it or give your money back.

Spend 5 minutes tonight and file your complaint. When they respond to the complaint on or about Weds they will no doubt want you to wait and see if the new firmware fixes all your problems. We already know it won't, hell they even admitted it in their forums..therefore when they respond with this you immediately file a response that says NO..either replace the router or give you the money back...it's that simple...play hardball. You won't regret it.

If enough of you people will stop dillydallin around and file your complaints and demand closure they have no choice but to comply. The choice is make it right with you or you join the damaged class and thats when I can really help you.

Until you guys get up and do these things and hold D-Links nose to the fire I can't do a thing for you. And to be honest I really hope they refuse you so we can get enough people together and nail these bastards.

I tried to give D-link the benefit of the doubt, but Im having serious wireless issues, so serious we went out to get ethernet cables today to run into my office. I now have wireless turned off completely on the router, its just doesn't work the way its supposed to. Disconnects or pages just failing to load, the first days seemed okay, but wireless is unusable for me right now.

We need a new firmware, I can't deal with this anymore its really annoying me.

Im trying to sign up for d-link's beta forum to give some feedback, but I can't sign up for some reason.

Why not strengthen your position by also filing the BBB complaint as I've detailed? It truly takes less than 5 minutes and ask anyone who's followed the instructions...you do get better results. Plus it forever documents your experience with D-Link and thats important to prevent this from happening to other users.

Hey there;

I have been trying to document the issues with DLink and there firmware regarding wireless restarts on my blog at »dir855.wordpress.com/wireless-restarts/

I recently had a user do some wireshark packet captures and has discovered potentially why there is wireless issues. Have a look and see if you think this is inline with what you have scene.

I've added your examples to all the pages posted related to this issue. If anyone else has examples they want to share please let us know. The sooner we can connect all the dots and show consumers there is a clear pattern of deception, misdirection related to D-Links products the better.

i also have a problem with my DLINK router.

i have a DGL 4300, when updated firmware to 1.5 the problem started.
i had router restarts, wifi problem to it stopped working after day or two need to plug off the power the router to make it work again.
L2TP was reconnected like 3-4 times a day (and when connected directly to pc almost never disconnected)

i played Online games with this router and when i was AFK it always DC from the internet.
it pissed me off but had nothing to do...

when updated to 1.9 (from dlink officially website)
my router worked few hours and after it connection with pc gone.

and now, even when i reset the router the connection not getting back.
i cant even join the router configurations address to downgrade it back.
seems like the router completely fucked up.

now bought a DGL 4500 and scare to update firmware (the DGL dc but i had good performanse even when others used thier pc my games worked great)

sorry for my english.

This probably isnt the thread for you question. This is dealing primarily with the dgl-4500 using the latest firmware only.

I am curious has anyone tested the wired speeds and checked to see if they are up to par? They do not seem to be to me. It used to be superfluous. Now I am bursty and around 20MB/s lower than I used to get.

I'll plug the thing back in and run the same diagnostics again and post back. I suspect they will be fine...never had issues there just had the issues with the lockup and wireless.

@verizon.net

Thank you for your help. Fortunately, I have found where the issues resides. The router performs nominally at gigabit speeds. This is after I found that the issue is with Linux and not the router. The firmware upgrades coincided with kernel upgrades and therefore took a little deeper looking than I originally was doing. From Windows to Windows it is exactly on par in performance. But from Windows to Linux it is under 20MB/s and very bursty rather than superfluous.

Hey Twisted!!

I see you pretty much said the hell with it over in the dlink 3rd phase thread. I take it you couldn't get the thing to work reliably wireless or wired eh? Maybe its time to just file that complaint and get your money back sir. File the complaint and you WILL get your money back.

And apparently they have now locked that thread because it has served it's purpose....WTH! This is how they get you guys...they get what they need, lock the thread and then it's up to you to figure out how to continue getting support on the beta code or the latest fix. There is no way for you to really follow a situation and this is EXACTLY how they want it.

They know if they jerk you around long enough you will just go away. Now if you guys had just done what I told you to do...I mean all of you...we wouldn't talkin about this still today..it would be in a courtroom by now.

The only problem I had was with the previous firmware causing a reboot. With the recent firmware and the beta I am testing out the only problem I have, which is very asinine, is the fact that I have to reboot if I enable or disable a port on the router. All is perfect and I have one the supposed defective A1 models. It makes me wonder how relative this is to the users.

Personally, the new Netgear router is not that much better than people think. One major reason as to why I say this is due to the fact that it is not 802.11n ratified. It is a draft 802.11n.

You probably don't do much with the wireless side of your DGL-4500 then because the latest firmware update did nothing to improve it and in many cases appears to have made things worse.

Not much has been discussed about the Netgear router here because its not a thread for that but honestly I think people are talking in general terms. Meaning better support, better reliability so far and no known firmware issues that impede the product from delivering as advertised...none of which D-Link has a concept about.

I actually do do much with wireless-at work and at homes that is mine and my families and friends. But over the years I have learned of wireless' caveats. Having extensive core logic knowledge is, what I would think, the major factor for implementing a good network.

I am unsure about what could actually be the problem with the DGL-4500 for some but I know one thing. When I asked a while back what the "issue" was there was no direct answer from anyone. Also reading much of the help around here is so far off at times that it makes me often wonder.

Like at Vizionblind's post: D-LINK DGL 4300. How do I get my router from STRICT to OPEN? Look at the answer you and MLGTWISTED provided and then compare how you two have had some of the most complicated problems with the DGL-4500. This is not the only post I have seen here like so.

I cant deny that there may be an issue with the router because it is probable-although me and my users are not experiencing this personally. But I wonder if it relative to the router or to the knowledge and implementation of the user.

I do think it is a valid point to make about the WNDR3700, because anyone with a bit of wit will find all the routers in about the same boat, and this one does not qualify as a sure win to me in a technical comparison. But there are some that really are very compatible with protocols and the Ubicom processor and ipOS combo have proven to me (at least) to be one of the best SOHO routers out there.
