PS3 or XBox 360?

I am thinking of buying one of them but i dont know which one to get. I am used to the playstation paddles. I know Xbox has Halo which is a plus for that. But I also want to use it as a computor in my bedroom. So which ever one is better at online. Just give me your reasons why you like one of them.

Xbox isn't meant to be used in place of a computer, largest downside of it from that viewpoint is that the 360 doesn't have an internet browser, which the PS3 does. Can anyone with a PS3 chime in with more info about the broswer?

As far as online capabilities goes the 360 multiplayer is available with a gold member subscription, about $50(US) per year if you select the yearly subscription, which is the cheapest option. Netflix streaming is available, once again you need a gold member subscription, and a Netflix subscription of course. Officially the PS3 doesn't have Netflix, I have heard that there is a workaround to this, once again can a PS3 user provide more info please?

Both consoles have their own libraries of TV shows to purchase, on the 360 each SD episode is $2 and HD is $3, 160 and 240 Microsoft points respectively ($1 = 80 MS points). Movies rentals in SD are $4 and in HD are $6. Once again, could use some PS3 user input about the equivalent.

Instead of all that I just stream all my videos/music from my computer with a program called TVersity which works on both consoles. Is there anything else you want to know more specifically about?

Edit: Typos

I have a PS3.

Browser - Yup it browses decently, but I wouldn't throw away the ole' computer if you think you will get the same browsing experience. That lack of a keypad sets you back on ease of use in the browser, but the controller workaround is intuitive enough. The one thing to keep in mind is some sites may not work right depending on the plug-ins they use. The PS3 has Flash and Java down, but the more obscure applets I wouldn't count on it.

Computer replacement - It's not really built to replace a PC. Stuff like word processing and other stuff for the office or class won't translate well on the PS3. You can install Linux on the PS3, but that's about the only OS it will take. Sony doesn't make a PC-type OS for the PS3. Remember the PS3 was designed to be an entertainment hub and media center. As long as you're cool with those limits then rock on.

There is some great media server software out there for the PS3 to network into your computer and pull media files directly (photos, movies, music, you name it).

Online - If you mean online gaming then the edge is gonna be the Xbox360 from what I've heard, but the downside is you gotta pay. The PS3 does online gaming for free. Both give you options to download full games or game content for a price and both offer free demos of games. Movies and TV downloads are about the same on both with the exception of the Xbox working with Netflix online streaming (with purchase of accounts on both Xbox Live and Netflix subscription).

Ultimately if you are dead set on browsing and the "computer in my bedroom" plan and don't mind that computer being Linux then the choice will be obvious for you. The PS3. If that's not as big a deal then look at the games available on each system and pick based on which has more games you want to play.

Here's another point: pick the one your friends have! You'll want to play online games with them, so you'll want the same console.

The PS3 has a browser, but IMO it isn't a very good implementation. I don't think a PS3 will replace most computers for browsing. Though with the older PS3's (not the PS3 slim) you can install Linux. With Linux the PS3 may be a decent PC replacement, if you like Linux. The memory on the PS3 is very limited, it uses a notebook hard drive and is thus a bit slow.

I have several PS3's and an Xbox 360 elite. My kids prefer the PS3, but they are probably more used to it, and have had it longer. My Xbox 360 died (red ring of death) within about 2 months or so of use. Microsoft did replace it for free, though it took almost a month.

There is no annual "gold" membership fee for the PS3. Playing online with the PS3 is free.

Overall, I prefer our PS3 to the Xbox 360, though it is an individual call. I'm 100% certain there are many who prefer the Xbox 360.

Go to a local store and take a look at both, see which you like.

Both will disappoint you as far as being an effective replacement to a computer, particularly for browsing the internet. The 360 has no browser, but the Sony-provided one for the PS3 isn't something I would see myself using everyday either. In this sense, I appreciate the 360 for being more purposefully made, whereas it seems the ps3 just wants to try to do everything, but doesn't really focus on any of them that well (especially with newer models, but I digress ).

Despite the fee for online play, many still hold Xbox Live in high regard, and it definitely gets more frequent updates. Fundamentally, there shouldn't be as many differences anymore because neither console's online offers actual client/server-style games anymore, but the 360 would have the advantage in the sense that Microsoft would have plenty of network presence for the xbox to minimize the time it would take to find players and overall online latency. With Sony, it's still really up to the publishers or developers to either pay Sony to host the matchmaking on the PSN or to set up appropriate hosting and have the ps3 refer to that (as I understood it - please correct me if I'm wrong).

Other than that, if you've got console-owning friends and they've games you want to play them online with, pick the console more of them have... if not both.

He's not trying to replace a computer just wants it for his bedroom.

I use my PS3 way more than my 360 but most of my friends are on the PS3.

The browser is good enough for the bedroom just invest in a wireless keyboard to use with it and the blu ray player is a nice bonus.

The PS3 browser does make it fun to watch online movies and pixelated YouTube videos on my big television. Get a mouse/keyboard option and online games can be a blast too.

You can not choose a wrong answer here.

I have both and LOVE both. They both have their good and bad points.

Love XBox Live, Love Halo
Love PSNetwork, Love Uncharted 2

I use my 360 a bit more for gaming but use my PS3 more on the whole with the BluRay player

You're ignoring MGS4, Uncharted, Demon's Souls among others. Xbox has Halo/GOW notably.

Both are great (I have both). The blu-ray is a nice bonus.

If I had to chose only one, likely PS3 as online is free and you get blu-ray. Both have their own quality titles, majority of games are on both. The built-in wireless on the Ps3 is also nice.

But yeah, there is no wrong choice here.

So you can use a mouse/keyboard with the PS3 games? Mainly looking for the answer with FPS style games.

If so, hot damn I might be a console gamer now!

Not with FPS games from what I can tell. Just for browsing or any other app that can use a mouse/keyboard. You will need to use the PS3 controller for any gaming unless the game designer added the kb/m functionality in the game. The cool thing is there are plenty of game demos to download and you can see if console FPS is right for you (also some games are designed with the controller in mind). Now the 360 also has free game demo downloads to be fair.

i would go for the ps3 for these reasons: It has built in wifi so you wouldn't need to connect it directly to an Ethernet cable if you have a wireless router. The PSN (playstation Network) is free to all playstation owners, and is great for online play. also the psn has the playstation store which is great for downloading free demos, videos, trailers, wallpapers and themes and psn games which only cost you little. Go and search more on the internet, many websites should have discounts in xmas time.

I'll just throw my .02 in. If you don't already have a bunch of friends that you plan on gaming online with on Xbox Live already, I say you could go either way. I have both, and while they both offer online play, Live is far and away a better system.

I don't complain about PSN since it's free, but you can really tell you are dealing with a company that is a couple years late to the party (speaking of party...PSN does not offer party chat across multiple games). I love games like Uncharted 2, and the multiplayer works well..but with PSN, it's a new online setup with every game for the most part because a lot of things just aren't standardized across the platform.

Even a simple thing like chat doesn't work every time since there are so many variables that have been introduced with all the different hardware you can use to chat. The official Sony mic is good...but almost too good. It picks EVERYTHING up, so while it might cause you some issues...you are hearing everyone...and everything going on at everyone's house as well in a multiplayer game. I can only hope MAG offers noise cancellation or that is going to be one headache!

PS3 is great for media (Blu Ray, video/audio files) and is nice and quiet in your entertainment setup. 360 will do much of that as well...and in some cases better, but it is a lot more background noise.

If you are an addict to Winning Eleven, you should go for PS3, it also can be a Blu-ray player, which cost a few hundred dollars, ps3 has got a right track on this fabulous function. And I agree with above, I've searched for a few websites which are having discounts to ps3 console, but the most attractive one is the lucky draw by dsstyles, they are launching it right now, seems so attractive, go www.dsstyles.com and see the details.

it comes down to what is your primary focus, Gaming or all around entertainment?

if all around entertainment is your focus, then I'd recommend a PS3. i've had mine for over a year now and to be honest i watch movies, listen to music, stream media (music and movies) in real time to my PS3, and then i play the awesome games. PS3 is still the best blu ray player you can buy.

also, just my opinion, games look more realistic on the PS3.

So if gaming is all your really concerned with, get a xbox.
