1 edit | Issues with 2Wire 2701HG-G
Greetings!
With great hopes that someone out there will be able to clear these several issues I am having with my connection, here are my problems.
First of,here are the results from my diagnostics in 2Wire 2701HG-G Gateway modem:
DSL Synchronization: No DSL signal was found G.DMT Signal: No DSL signal was found PVC Connection: - PPPoE Service: - PPP Authentication: - IP Connection: - DNS Communication: -
However, these goes up here and now. I was not having any problems until just now with my own computer, which is linked by Ethernet to the modem. Having said that, my roommate which is wirelessly connected to my modem through a DLink adapter, is constantly losing his connection either on Internet or on his Nintendo DS. Our Nintendo DS are connected through my Nintendo USB connector and both are also dropping (had to use that since the DS light does not accept anything else than WEP). As for my Nintendo Wii, same problem. As for the PS3 and PSP, both will connect to the access point just like any other systems we are using but just won't connect to the Internet, or does, and soon after loses the connection.
I really am lost here. I have tried many things and my ISP nor Sony is being helpful here. Telling me stuff I knew years ago which really does not solve anything. I know where the control panel is for crying out loud -_-'. Every troubleshooting guide I have been through have proved to be total failures.
Anyway, hopefully there are some professionals in here which will guide me to the exact solution.
More info:
-WPA2-PSK with a passphrase. -Added all the MAC addresses there was to be added. -Disabled both mine and his firewall. -AVG Anti-virus on both computers. -Network adapters: Nintendo WI-FI USB connector/1394 Net adapter/NVIDIA nForce Networking controller
Any other information, please do ask. I shall be back in a couple of hours if my modem allows it.
Thank you in advance!
Best regards, D-K
P.S.: I did some diagnostics again:
DSL Synchronization: UP G.DMT Signal: UP PVC Connection: Could not find an ATM circuit PPPoE Service: - PPP Authentication: - IP Connection: An Internet address could not be obtained DNS Communication: Unable to contact the Domain Name Server |

| As long as the 2wire is powered up the wireless will work if you have not disabled it
Looks like you need to focus on the dsl issues The first diagnostics you posted the modem can't find a dsl signal
The second diagnostics is just as bad no atm circuit
Both issues point to your dsl provider
You should connect the modem to the demark/nid the no dsl signal could be caused by the inside wiring The no atm circuit is a isp problem nothing on your end of things can cause that |

Ok so there they are. It seems I am not 'pingable'. As for the first test I posted, it was found irrelevant as I had to wait, for the results to be done with, which I did not.

Now, my roommate has been able to connect his PS3. His MAC address had mysteriously deleted itself from my allowed ones.
As for Application Control through the 2wire modem interface, I have restored defaults to 'Maximum protection Disallow unsolicited inbound traffic' which got set on every console and computers. Under security, I unchecked those three to see if I would then be 'pingable'. Failure so I put them back on.
Security Check to enable the features below: Stealth Mode Block Ping Strict UDP Session Control
In the Inbound and Outbound controls, everything is checked except NetBios.
Inbound and Outbound Control
Checking the box allows the associated traffic type through the Application Support. Outbound HTTP HTTPS FTP Telnet SMTP DNS NetBIOS POP3 IMAP NNTP IRC H323 All Other Protocols Inbound NetBIOS
As for the attack detections, everything is checked.
Attack Detection Check to detect the types of attacks below: Excessive Session Detection TCP/UDP Port Scan Invalid Source/Destination IP address Packet Flood (SYN/UDP/ICMP/Other) Invalid TCP Flag Attacks (NULL/XMAS/Other) Invalid ICMP Detection Miscellaneous
That's about everything that I can manage to give you guys without proper guidelines for now. My computer seems to still be connected to the Internet. However, my roommate is still constantly losing his connection, whether it be 5 hours after he has established it, or 5 minutes. |

1 edit | reply to DeadlyKnight It also seems I have close to 100% packet loss in addition to not being 'pingable' and when using traceroute, most attempts gets timed out.
I cannot reach the Management and Diagnostic Console of my modem because it asks me for a password which I have no clue what it is. |

1 edit | reply to DeadlyKnight *UPDATE*
Using this website: »www.psc.edu/networking/projects/tcptune
and this software: SG TCP optimizer
and a bit of editing the registry... and going through the 'Address allocation' of my modem and assigning each console and computer a different private fixed IP address...for example 192.168.2.45... turning my firewall back on... etc...
I think I have cleared the problem with the packet loss issue and maybe, just maybe some other issues with my modem and connections.
I have also changed my BDP to 190000. To come up with this number, I used my latency which its highest was around 107 and my broadband advertised download speed of 10Mbps. Am I correct to assume that 190 000 is the right number? It used to be around 55 000...
To get these tests to work, I had to uncheck 'Block Ping' from my modem 'Application controls'
»/linequality/nil/2577280 »/tweakr/block:···nXPpppoe
I have now put those options back on. In the next following days, my roommate and I will see if we lose connection over any of our computers and console.
Meanwhile, please post and help me out with whatever might be the reason for all these troublesome events.
Thanks again! |

| The line stats look good the modem has only had dsl sync for about 8 hours or so
There is a nice spread between the sync rate 7040kbps and the max sync rate 11000kbps
The dsl looks good judging by the info posted
The issues with the ethernet and wireless are local to you You need to find out if the wireless problem is a dhcp issue or a encryption issue
The ethernet issue may be a dhcp problem specifying a private ip address may be a solution |

| I did assign a private address to each console and computer like I stated before.
I just woke up and everything still works fine, except for my roomate computer which is losing the access point every now and then. Internet for him is also very slow. When I did a packet loss test, he loses 92% of the data. He can give but not receive properly.
Which setting(s) could affect that?
I'll be away for several hours, leaving you plenty of time to seek and formulate ^^.
Thanks again. |

1 edit | It never prompts for the encryption key. It finds the access point, connects to the Internet wirelessly (through his linksys adapter), and then after X minutes, hours, it loses the access point.
As for the IP's...I did assign them within the range of the 2wire's dhcp pool.
DHCP Range: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Allocated: 6 Available: 239
My DHCP lease is set at 24h. Is that a good thing? |

Are you sure the computer is not powering down the network adapter that's connected to the linksys adapter
said by DeadlyKnight :As for the IP's...I did assign them within the range of the 2wire's dhcp pool. Doing that can sometimes cause problems The page where you found that dhcp info suggests that the 2wire has static private ip address pool, on that page there can be a dhcp range section listing the lowest and highest dhcp ip address
I would assign any computer that has a server or is used for games a ip address that is not a part of the dhcp range
The dhcp lease time is ok |

| No I am not sure that his or my computer his not powering down whatever network adapter you are talking about. Beside my 2Wire modem and his Dlink adapter, there is no other adapter. Where do I look for this issue?
In the 'Edit address allocation' settings, I am only allowed to assign one from the 63 'Private fixed' address OR the single 'Private from pool' address. My 'Wan IP mapping' can only be set at default 'Router Wan IP address (default)'.
By the way, all the consoles and computers are checked for 'Application protection' which is set at ' Maximum protection Disallow unsolicited inbound traffic.' I do not want to enable 'Allow all applications (DMZplus mode)'. As for 'Allow individual application(s)', it's mostly good for games if I am right. |

Hi,
I have sent an exchange modem out because you might have an issue with the modem firmware. Because we don't have any issue reported in your area that could effect the line performance to dropped the connection.

I am pretty pretty sure he did not read the entire thread and as I am well aware of the competence of most Bell technicians. It's always the easy solution to blame the modem, which I only had for a year now. The other one before that got fried for an unknown reason after a year of usage. I know that I don't go easy on it by downloading about 250~300GB of data per month but still.
ANYWAY, praises to this lightning fast shipping from them. Got an answer at 17:32 yesterday, was probably too late to get the modem sent on the same day but still, I got my modem today. Well, I don't have it since I wasn't home, but I'll have it tomorrow.
Do you think it will solve the problem? I didn't update the firmware even though I know how and where to go. It's like overclocking, I'm too scared to mess with those. |

| reply to DeadlyKnight said by DeadlyKnight :No I am not sure that his or my computer his not powering down whatever network adapter you are talking about. When you connect a ethernet cable to a device the port you connect the cable to can be called a network adapter, nic, ethernet port, windows can power down the network adapter

Its always better to "Allow individual application(s)" for games and servers, I think you made the right choice
I don't think there is a problem with the dsl or the modem, with the info you posted the modem has not run long enough
I think you should give it some time keep an eye on this page 192.168.2.1/xslt?PAGE=B04 Pay attention to these lines: DSL Link Retrains ISP Connection Establishment If you continue to use the 2wire save another copy of the J45 page after a few days
Would you be willing to post images of some 2wire gui pages |

| And wouldn't my own desktop Internet lose its connection if Windows would power down my networking controller? I am not losing my connection, only others. Although, I think it is stable so far. Waiting for my roommate to come back from school. How can I check about the powering down issue? |

| reply to DeadlyKnight Disregard the request for images of the modems pages You're not comfortable with doing that so don't do it
said by DeadlyKnight :And wouldn't my own desktop Internet lose its connection if Windows would power down my networking controller? Yes you are correct, every device has its own connection to the local network (2wire) If a wireless or ethernet link is down the device will not be able to access anything in the network including the internet
The internet connection can be up ready to use, any device that has its ethernet/wireless connection down will not be able to access the internet |

1 edit | Ok...I'm really getting annoyed here. I lost connection for everything, even my computer for a moment and I've been gone for only four hours. My router detected a third-party router and asked me if I wanted the problem resolved. I clicked yes and what it did was putting me into DMZ plus mode. I do not want that so I disabled it and went back to ' Maximum protection Disallow unsolicited inbound traffic.'. If you go to the application control main interface, it says:
Current Settings: Default To allow users on the Internet to connect to a computer inside your secure home network, you must configure the Home Networking Modems Application settings.
I guess that might be one of the sources for all these problems. Maybe it's the network connection settings. I really do not know. I have tried so many things, Yet, as of now, I have Maximum Protection enabled, my Windows XP antivirus enabled and all of AVG's features enabled as well.
As I said, every MAC address are entered but my Nintendo USB key, my roommate DSlink adapter, both are not entered in the 'Application support', at least not that I am aware of.

When I choose mine, 'Maximum Protection enabled'.

Exact same things goes for something I have called 'PC-de-utilisate', the Wii, PS3, and my roommate computer. |
