[HD] What HD channels do you most want Verizon to add?

I'll be the first to trumpet that FiOS' HD channel lineup is great, in fact it's the best currently available. However, the best can always get better.

I'm curious to know what HD channels that are currently available (please note the qualifier) you would most like to see added to FiOS.

To get an idea of what HD channels are currently available that FiOS doesn't carry, see this site: »www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre···=1058081

For me, I'd like to have the following (in order of preference):

1. HLN
2. Turner Classic Movies
3. Cartoon Network
4. Crime & Investigation
5. Investigation Discovery
6. BBC America
7. Starz West

That's not a very long list, and these additions would completely satisfy me until new HD channels come online.

Thread from earlier this year: So what HD channels do you MOST want to see on FiOS?

None,

More HD channels = Higher content costs = Increase prices?

Hmmm, do you not have an HDTV? If that's it, I could understand your opinion. Otherwise, hmmm...

MSNBC!!

Ditto on TCM, Cartoon Network and HLN.

In the NY-NJ area we also need the MSG channels in HD!

The channel I most want is the a la carte channel. I get so fed up with having to buy things I do not want, need nor use in order to get that which I do want and use. Let those who use it, pay for it.

Given the costs of content, etc, you would probably end up paying just as much if not more for just the channels you wanted.

Doubtful.

In fact I wish they would go 100% PPV at the program level.

Everyone thinks that a la cart would be cheaper. In reality, individual channels would almost certainly cost more.

If you spread costs for a channel across an entire subscriber base then the cost per individul is minimal. Spreading the costs over, say, 10% of your subscriber base means that the cost per individual would be 10 times higher. Simple math.

Also, a pure a la cart system would need better accounting systems to manage it, and that would cost money too.

If that's the case, why don't you cancel your TV service and get a device like the Roku streaming video player? You could use it with the Amazon video on demand service and just pay per episode for what you want.

I have a HDTV, two actually. And I'm leaning more towards supporting Onedollar See Profile side of the argument. My family, in general, watches only a handful of stations: locals, Discovery, SyFy, Lifetime (the wife), and ESPN, plus a few more for the kids (Nick, Noggin, etc) Occasionally Spike, FX, TBS, etc might slip in that list if they have a movie on that I want to see.

I don't watch nor have any interest in HLN in SD, so giving me a HD version isn't going to get me to watch. I already have CNN, Fox, and CNBC. One of those likely has the same politically slanted news that HLN has.

#2-6 in your list is more niche programming. I'm sure that some people would love to have them in HD. I'm sure many people never watch the SD versions of them so they don't care about the HD versions either. I fit into that category. I'm not real interested in another price increase for channels that I'm not going to watch. If I had to choose between adding those channels with a price increase and not carrying them to keep the same price, I'd chose to not carry them. Fortunately for Verizon and unfortunately for me, I probably won't be given a choice in the matter.

As to Starz West, isn't that primarily just a time-shifted copy of Starz East? Again, nice to have if you want it, but I don't know how much of a demand there is for it.

Although I have only SDTVs in the house, I have one HD DVR so I can view all channels. Weird, I know, but it sure does make for nice clean views of football games.

Re the topic: I have no additional suggestions for HD channels to add, but would (on a slightly OT note) like to see fuller support of AFD -- so we folks who haven't yet been lucky enough to get HDTVs wouldn't have to see the crappy framing currently used when SD channels air 16x9 material without letterboxing. For example, the people who produce my favorite broadcast-channel show apparently decided this summer that every one of its viewers now can see a full 16x9 display, based on how much stuff is now happening at the edges of (or even apparently out of sight of) my pedestrian 4x3 display. In the season opener, they even had the titles going off-screen for 4x3.

[To clarify: I have to watch the broadcast-channel show on an SDTV with an SD box, because my wife is watching her favorite show, in full-16x9, on the HD DVR at the same time. Neither of us have time to watch either show at another time, and she likes to be able to switch channels during the show's commercials, so I can't simply record my show off an HD channel on the DVR and watch it in full 16x9 later. Keepin' peace in the family, y'know... Besides, it still wouldn't excuse the lack of AFD support even if my own particular issue was resolved.]

Of course, if it's to be assumed that the benefits of all-digital TV are for only those with 16x9 displays and that we who don't have it should shut up and live with non-letterboxed versions of 16x9 programming, then I guess I missed that memo.

The a la carte crowd also seems to forget about the infrastructure/support/maintenance costs. If you had FIOS/cable/satellite TV with zero channels, it would be far from free.

Well, where I live, I'd say MSG-HD, MSG+HD, MSNBC, and a more localized Weather Channel. But I'm content with what I've got.

But the reason I really replied was to do my (slightly altered) impression of Shaggy, who I used to watch over-the-air on Saturday morning cartoons:

"Billy-twoooo.... Where are youuuuuu?"

I would have been sure he'd be the first to reply here!
