|  Cisco VPN to home Router
Want a worker to connect to my home network via VPN. I have the Linksys [Cisco] WRV200 business class wireless router.
The server [router] address is obviously an inside number. How does one get the public IP address for the router? What is my IPaddress.com shows the machine I am working from but not the router.
port 443 is the default. What is the vulnerablity to exploit with this well-known port? Is there a recommended alternative?
I have a dynamic DNS address with "no-ip.com". Is this the preferred way to get to the router. Looking for the most secure way to do this.
What I want is for one employee to connect to my home desktop to access a single application from outside of my home. They should be able to connect from a hardwire connection or a wifi.

| The 'Outside' IP address is the same for the entire network, the router hides the 'Inside' Addresses and makes it look to the Internet like all your devices are one (Outside) address.
I have a WRV210, it has 3 VPN choices:
VPN Client access allows Win 200 and XP clients from outside VPN access to inside. (I suspect Vista and Win 7 as well)
VPN Passthrough allows a client inside the router to be a client to outside the router
IPSEC VPN (which I use) allows router to router VPNs with no software or changes to the inside or outside.

| Much thanks for the timely reply. Much appreciation for your authoritative reply. I would want to go with the VPN client access option. Wanted to try my own laptop to test but have reached an impasse. On the certificate page it is not clear on how to proceed. The two options are generate new certificate and import.
The 'generate' option would apparently create a certificate over the existing one.
The 'import' option was attempted and I browsed to a spot to place it but no filename appears in the destination box. The WRV admin literature [attached] is not clear to me on how to get the certificate on my laptop. It is my hope that I can continue with you for a few more posts. Much thanks for your informed guidance as I await your reply. |

I hope some one knows, I have only used the IPSEC VPN mode, which has no certificates.
You may wish to ask in the Linksys forum, if no one has an answer here.
