AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor - Retail
I'm trying to keep the costs down and I don't OC much but I do game a lot. I'm not really married to this processor but it looked like it was well regarded and I definitely want a quad. I'd even be interested in an Intel if it's comparable and in the same price range. IOW I'm open to everything. --
The way things are going for obama a second carter term might be his best case scenario.

Since you haven't bought the cpu yet: If you are going to spend $190 on a phenom II then you really should move to a $200 i5 setup instead.
Another option, if you prefer to focus on minimizing costs is an athlon II x4 620 for $100. This won't perform as well but, depending on the discussion of my questions below it may be a more appropriate choice.
Since you are gaming we ought to discuss the games involved and your plans for graphics card and power supply so we can properly integrate these other components into your overall plan. Focusing only on the cpu and motherboard isn't a good approach since you need to achieve the proper overall balance within your budget. I see you post a lot on the WoW forum. Are mmorpgs the only games involved or are we talking about other types as well? |

I play all kinds of games not just WoW but I'm not crazy, bleeding edge about it. |

| ok no psu issues at all. You have a decent midrange graphics solution and a nice hard drive so I would say an i5 could be a good approach. If ($200 CPU + $110ish + $60ish) $400 or so is acceptable then that would be the approach to take. Going with a 955 isn't going to save much money.
If that is more than you really wanted to spend the other alternative wouldn't be terrible. That would save you $100ish or maybe a bit more. It's difficult to give a consistent percentage gaming performance sacrifice since it will vary pretty widely. It will be a noticeable performance difference but the lower performance athlon II will still give playable levels for typical situations that most people will encounter.
If you have a preference and would like me to go into details I'll do that. |

1 edit | reply to kingdome74 I agree with the above posters, right now if you're budget is ~$100 the Athlon II is a great bang for the buck.
If you're looking to spend ~$200 the i5 750 can't be beat. Romps the X4 955 and uses less power to do it.
This article at Tom's Hardware pretty much concurs.
The only place to look at the Phenom II lineup is if you're budget is about $150. The Toms Hardware article (and others) shows the L3 cache really doesn't help much, the Phenom II's only really beat the Athlon II's because of higher clock frequency. So you spend $170 on a 945 to get 3GHz instead of 2.6/2.8 GHz with an Athlon II 620/630 for $100/120. If you're going to spend more on a 955/965 you should just get an i5.
Nonetheless if you really want to spend $170 the 945 is what you want and the TH article I linked suggests this. |

| reply to kingdome74 I'm good with going with an i7. I hadn't realized they had fell that far in price. Now the mobo just can be pretty basic. No preference with brand name. Same with RAM. I figure I'll use 4 GB or 6 GB depending on what's needed. I'll be installing Win7. |

The memory is on gigabytes qualified vendors list for that motherboard.
I'll discuss anything further if you wish. This is $400+shipping. |

1 edit | Awesome, thank you. I do believe this will fit my needs.
Thankfully I have a huge, full sized case. I haven't seen SATA's stacked on their side like that before. The only thing that looks like it might be tight is space between video card and the RAM holders. I'm assuming at this point any mobo maker understand that the new vid cards are humongous. |
