Strange Sync speeds after outage

Before the 66 hour outage that started on Sept. 16th I was normally getting an upload sync rate of either 224 or 256, sometimes lower on very hot days. The download sync rate was anywhere from 196 to 380 depending on the outside temperature.

After the outage the download seems to be stuck at 320 (even if I power cycle at night and end up with a margin of 8 or 9db) and the upload at 128 with an absurdly low noise margin.

Could this have been something they changed at the central office? Who should I talk to about this? Here are the current statistics:

Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 320 128
Margin (dB) 8.5 1.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 63.5 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 12.4 11.5

Question, 66 hour outage on 9/16/09? I don't see anything regarding any outages on that date in John Day, OR or in the state or OR. Are you sure this wasn't a localized issue?

As for that sync rate, that is the correct sync rate for the 256k download but the upload sync rate, that should be a bit higher. Call the help desk to advise them of this to get it resolved.

even if the upload isn't programmed correctly, there is a problem somewhere. Your margins are low. Are you on Extended DSL? What package are you paying for?

Yes, it's the infamous "Extended DSL", so I'm paying the 1.5mb price for whatever the line will support.

Download speed isn't too much different that it was before with the exception of it seems to be limited to 320 even if the noise margin is high enough for a higher speed. It's the upload that is seriously wrong.

I'll try to find some intelligent life at Centurytel to discuss it.

Your modem is the culprit more than likely. It's been an ongoing issue with the Westell's reporting incorrect upload stats. I've come across it several times, and you can even find other users on this forum who have had the same issue. Some have switched modems, and haven't had those issues any more.

You can confirm this by having a tech come out and check the margins either at the NID, or at your phone jack, and see what it shows.

Just talked to one of their DSL "support" people. They had me go to speedtest to run a test and the results were:
204ms ping, .259mbs download, and 0.08mbs upload

They claimed (although I was getting up to 256kbs upload before the outage) that I'm only supposed to get up to 512/128 so they refused to put in a ticket.

Using DslREports speed tests the upload speeds are even worse:
112ms ping, 0.259mbs download, and 0.016mbs upload - LA
67ms ping, 0.263mbs download, and 0.021mbs upload - SF
111ms ping, 0.263mbs download, and 0.028mbs upload - Denver

I'm going into town tomorrow, I think I'll stop by the C.O. and see if I can get some more information.

I gave you the information on my previous post. The improper margin reporting is the culprit of your upload issue, which can severely affect download speed if it isn't reporting the margins correctly. You need to look into buying a new or used modem to get away from the Westell.

Out of curiosity I checked with a neighbor and found his upload sync was at 128 too, although with a 10db noise margin so he is probably getting near that speed. His download was actually lower than mine.

I talked (if you can call it that) with a lineman and he had the same "I don't care if it works" attitude as well. What a company. I'm going to check around and see if anyone here is using Verizon mobile broadband to see if it actually works. I like being in an area with only a few thousand people, but that also means no phone company has any reason to care about a few hundred customers.

I suppose I could take a chance and buy a better modem to see if what happens but then what do I do with the Westell modem I'm renting from Centurytel? Will they take it back?

With your attitude you project, I'm surprised anyone tries helping you.

What an insightful comment. I admit I'm easily frustrated when dealing with the weak minded.

I did a little experiment that proved useful. The modem is normally powered all the time. I left it unplugged for about 3 hours and when I plugged it back in it synced at 160 upload with a 10db margin instead of the 128 with 1db margin it had been running. When the modem was only unplugged for a few minutes, it would always come up with the broken 128.

Now instead of 10-30kb/sec upload speed I'm getting 126kb/sec, which is about what you would expect.
