When you guys had your's installed did they install anything along with the modem? Did they test the cable line itself? It seems the speeds I am getting are inconsistent (going up and down dramatically and sometimes stopping altogether). My x-treme speeds were always consistent. Also, did anyone notice if this does anything for their pings? Thanks for any info.
That's pretty much normal. The install for nitro is really just a modem swap.

Latency/Stability are identical before and after the switch for me in the fraser valley area. Try calling in and having them check the levels on your modem, and for errors/packetloss. 2:30-3:30 is usually quiet, as is after 10:30 or so.

I had this installed today in downtown Vancouver. I was a little surprised that all the tech guy did was swap out the modem with the new docsis 3.0 modem. He admitted he wasn't familiar with the new modems/docsis 3 installation procedures (if there are any), and he just got back from vacation.

I am having the exact same problem, the only time I have had a stable connection with the nitro service on the first day. The tech that installed mine did a line check and activated the modem. That was last Monday; I now have tech coming on site to check the modem to see if it was defective.

The best thing to do is call tech support, ask them to check the levels on the modem, then have them check if the modem has been flapping. My modem has been flapping quiet a bit, hopefully tomorrow they will check the line and then swap the modem out for a new one.

I will update you on my experiences.

Vancouver Speeds
Hey guys,
Thanks to CRoZZ and his/her speed post, I came to realize all this time I had Nitro but the servers in Vancouver could not handle the speeds for that matter. So like CRoZZ, I chose San Jose as my test site, and well the results were where they needed to be

I will post a print screen of my connection. However, I do have to note the tests are very spiky. In other words, sometimes it states I'm only getting 40-60 mbps, next min it'll say my speeds are the usual rounds (70 - 90 mbps), and sometimes it'll say my speeds are 110 - 140 mbps.

I haven't had the luxury of finding a stable server where I can download a large enough file to see what the xx mb/s would be. Anyone have any ideas?

Go to testmy.net and download the large files, should get a more accurate test.

Thanks for the info. I haven't been monitoring it as closely lately but if I see it happening I'll guess I'll have to give them a call.

On another note, I wonder how much tolerance they would have for someone who goes over the 400gig limit? Hehe. The max I did with my xtreme was around 150gigs (100 limit).. But with the jump in bandwidth it's tempting hehe. Not sure if I could ever reach that though.

FML!
I JUST WANT A SERVER TO TEST TO KNOW I'M ACTUALLY GETTING WHAT I PAID FOR!

MOST SERVERS I TRY "SEEM" TO MAX OUT AROUND 30-40 MBPS!!!

I'M CURRENTLY ON 100 MBPS SHAW NITRO, IN VANCOUVER, AND EVERYTIME I TRY FOR A SPEED TEST IT SAY 30 - 40 MBPS (using Metrobridge Servers).

I NEED A REAL SPEED TEST SERVICE SO I CAN ONCE AND FOR ALL KNOW THAT I'M GETTING (AROUND) 100 MBPS SO I CAN REST IN PEACE!! UNTIL THEN I FEEL LIKE SHAW IS RIPPING ME OFF!! IS ANYONE ELSE HAVING THIS PROBLEM?!

I'm sorry for all the CAPS lock, I'm just pissed that its been two weeks and Shaw has almost fed me BS about how "no servers in Vancouver / Canada (not sure if he said Canada, but I'm 100% sure he said Vancouver) are equipped to handle the 100+ speeds".

So I need to know:

a) has anyone been getting the 80 - 100 mbps speed test result simply through Metrobridge, or are you using a different server to check?
b) Even their own damn site: speedtest.shaw.ca, which by the way has the 100+ on their speed test fails to show my "true" speed, anyone else having that problem?
c) I know I previously posted a speedtest showing I was getting 89 mbps, but its so unstable! I want to trust it but the frequency it shows 30-40 mbps is far more than 80-100 mbps.
d) Their customer service department is useless. They don't know jack! They've made me "reset my modem" far too many times to prove they have no clue as to what's going on.

I need your help guys, please! Shaw's hemorrhaging money from me, I need to know once and for all what the truth behind this is.

Thanks.

anon_van100

@shawcable.net

a) I've been getting 80 - 85 mbps results on Metrobridge, during off peak hours. Seems to be more unstable during peak hours (evening)
b) I get the same problem from speedtest.shaw.ca.
c) During off peak hours, speeds fluctuate from 90 - 100 mpbs when I download multiple files from different servers, such as public fedora linux sites (»mirrors.fedoraproject.org/public···dora/11/) or from astraweb, and during peak hours it fluctuates from 40 to 60 mbps.
d) Tech 1 shaw customer support was useless when I complained about horrible speeds when I first got the service, as speeds only fluctuated from 30 - 55 mbps during off peak hours. Tech 2 service was a bit more helpful, and he mentioned it might be node issues. And now I seem to get speeds I mentioned above. Not sure if they did fix something, or if it was just another issue.

My Faulty Speed
Ok so the link you gave me:

»ftp://fedora.mirror.iweb.ca/releases/9···_64/iso/
mirrors.fedoraproject.org/public···dora/11/

All my speeds are hovering around 800 - 900 kB/s.... I don't even see my speeds break into the Mb/s... and I'm even connecting through a server that can handle 1000, IP 4 and IP 6 enabled. Can you test a server for me where for you it will be running real fast and send me that exact link so I can compare?

I've even tried the »www.microsoft.com sites in the Download center and they run 800 to 900 kb/s too.

Even at 9 AM, when there shouldn't be congestion, my speeds via Metrobridge are 35 mbps down but 4.xx mbps up. I don't geti it, I just don't get it. (print screen attached)

I'm connected directly to the modem via Ethernet cable, I've even gone the the extent of enabling 1 Gbps (full duplex mode forced via Ethernet settings). I currently use AVG anti-virus, Windows 7 Pro (64-bit).

I don't know what else to do? Shaw clams they've surveyed the area around me and the node congestion "seems fine, and there are no error". I'm running out of options. I've even read the link about "new Contract" and "old Contract" where they might simply be limiting me due to "previous nitro option" but that seems a little far fetched for it to be true.

What should I do? I feel so powerless, and Shaw doesn't seem to care about my problem, and even if there seem to be a node problem, they don't seem to want to spend money or time to fix this issue I'm having. They seem to have more fun passing me off and telling me BS stuff like "the servers in Vancouver are not equipped to handle speed test with your 100+ speeds"

If there's something I need to tell Shaw in order for them to take me seriously please do tell. Or maybe if you guys had the same problem and you needed to tell Shaw something in order for them to understand or precisely resolve the problem do tell.

please help.

Thanks.

P.S. When you say Tech 2 Service... what do you mean? like an in home Tech?

I think its just servers are not able to provide anywhere near 100mbit......Try this one, i get about 4.5 mbytes per sec:

Give this one and the one in my above post a go at the same time(You gotta be fast with the mouse hehe)

I can get close to 10mbyte per sec at the same time with these two going simultaneously.

Gonna be damn near impossible to max out on a single download.

As for the speedtest.net, i think unless a server very close to you can provide 100mbit then you will have a hard time maxing out.

I could care less about download speed anyways, i'm in it for the upload speed.

I have never gotten the shaw speed test to show above 50 even after getting 90 somewhere else. Dont let the shaw speed test get you down...

Here's the e-mail from Shaw (almost mocking me):

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Shaw Technical Support. We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with the speed through your new Shaw High Speed Nitro connection. Perhaps what is not being communicated to you concerning the Nitro service is that the available bandwidth that you currently have available is greater than the vast majority of sites that are out there. Speed test sites have limited bandwidth that they can allocate per connection. If the test site has a total of 100 mbps available to it, and if 3 people are connected, the bandwidth will be divided amongst the connections. This is of course a very simplified description of the problem. Speed test sites are at best an approximation

The other possible issue is compatibility. If you are using a wireless router then you will NOT get 100 mbps unless you are using a 802.11N router. If you are running multiple computers through a router, than you will see a slow down as the bandwidth is shared between the computers.

If you have programs running, such as file sharing programs and try to run a test you will see slower results as the programs are going to be using your bandwidth. It is also important to ensure that your network interface card is capable of 100 mbps. Check the modem and ensure the link light is blue – if it is not, then your computer is either not capable of 100mbps or is not configured correctly.

The same situation occurred with the launch of High Speed Extreme and the original Nitro (now Warp). Servers were just not able to cope with the maximum speeds available. You will see the most benefit from this service if you are doing multiple connections to different servers simultaneously.

We hope this information has addressed your inquiry. However, should you have any further questions or issues, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone at 604-629-4000, by email, or via live chat.

Here's the e-mail I sent to Shaw:

Hello,

I am quite the advance user when it comes to computers, LAN specifications, Network connections etc.

You mentioned a few points here and I will try to respond to the points which you have made:

1 - I understand servers are not "equipped to handle the bandwidth coming through, however when speedtest connections are made at BCIT to Metrobridge servers at any given time be it morning (8:30 - 11:59 am) to mid afternoon (12:00 - 5:30 pm) the speedtest.net results are always showing 90 - 130 mbps with 18 ms ping time. With my speedtest.net results its showing 20-40 mbps with 30 ms ping time. In addition on »www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthr···t=113945 I'm constantly seeing other users with the same Nitro experience post / print screen their speedtest.net result through the Vancouver, BC server (Metrobridge) and User: vahidpooyan didn't seem to have any problems getting those high speeds - I simply don't even get anywhere near those speeds.

2 - Let's assume that the shared bandwidth assumption is correct here; all computers within the house are either running Wireless N or a gigabit connection with each Ethernet cord attached as a CAT5e link. Personally I believe that should suffice for a connection that is only 100 mbps, however the whole network is Gigabit ready (or 300 mbps Wireless N ready).

3 - Once again, lets assume that speedtest.net simply generates an approximation, and there are users within the LAN whom use bandwidth. During the speedtest.net tests, none of the computers are/can use that much bandwidth in order to drag the results down to 20-40 mpbs!! There's only one computer that uses msdnaa for BCIT that requires high bandwidth, the rest are only used for youtube, emails, light website usage; and even during speedtest I make sure only one computer is connected directly to the modem, no router, for speedtest.

4 - I require true technicians. I understand the Nitro service is new, and most of the Shaw staff are undergoing training, however generic responses from response sheets is not appreciated! I TRULY require your most technical and able staff of Shaw's to look into this matter for me. This is issue has been going on for too long, and I'm tired of calling in or sending emails. I would appreciate if the info you would send me would be correct instead; for example the first top blue light actually signifies that "downstream channel is connected with bonded channels" and the second blue light (link) means its a gigabit connection, rather than a 100 mbps connection as incorrectly stated - even a 100 mbps line should suffice and worst comes to worse only 10% of the speed might be lost; so I should still be able to see 80 - 90 mbps!

5 - I have tried multiple servers, powerful servers in fact: nvidia, Microsoft, ydl.net (yellowdog linux servers), playstation network, sony, intel, amd, asus, shaw, rogers, etc. all run an accumulated (total) 2.5 to 4.5 mb/s! with multiple downloads to each server or individually.

6- I don't like paying for a premium service if I'm not even receiving premium support. I'm paying Shaw 100% of the service, and I would appreciate if Shaw could return the favor and deliver 100% of their service to me.

I would like to request someone knowledgeable within this regards, who(m) does not respond with a generic answer, however with expertise. I've tried whatever I can from my end, I really would appreciate it if you can do whatever you can from your end to deliver.

Thanks.

Arya, I hate to tell you this, but those emails you're sending end up at an EService team that's made up of front-line TSRs. You're not going to get the response you want from them, regardless of the number of emails you send. Even calling over and over isn't likely to get you what you want.

It's kind of a pain when this sort of thing happens, and you pretty much have to call in and lose your shit in order to get helped, and then it's probably not likely. Don't ask to talk directly to a Tier 2 agent, like everyone suggests, because they won't talk to you. Best you can hope for is you get a decent TSR who decides to take your request up to a TSR 2 who then decides to start and investigation to get it fixed. Then again, you're just another customer out of a million now.

but how do you download from astraweb? do you have to be a member?

Can you believe after all this time, Shaw is still resisting to come and take a look at my problems? We've simply been firing e-mails at each other comparing who's more technologically savvy, rather than a solution to my existing speed problem.

ps. thanks zeroumus for the speedtest.shaw.ca heads up

pps. thanks for the reply Ninja Action, I'll keep looking around in hopes of some chances here and there.

If anyone can still find me a solution I'd greatly appreciate your help as I'm still getting 20-40 mpbs - I would like to test this astraweb thing, but it seems like I need to pay for subscription... any ideas?

Kazul

@shawcable.net

As a Nitro customer I can see why you're not very pleased about all of this.

I have yet to be able to max out at anything more than 4-4.5mbytes a second unless I get someone to setup a direct line for me with bandwidth ready and waiting.

One thing I do ask is have you tried maxing out your connection using multiple downloads instead of one at a time? Sounds like you're only going by speed tests and direct single file downloads.

Hopefully you can get this fixed.

Remember that latency is going to play a big part of how fast you can go as well, thanks to the TCP receive window. You might want to make sure that you've maxed out the size of that window if your running XP (there is a tool on dslreports that will let you do this here: »/drtcp and the maximum window you could possibly specify is 64K ) That *may* help you get your speeds above 40 mbps. With Vista and Windows 7, you won't see this problem as they've tweaked the maximum receive window to be dynamic and some other tricks to get past the 64K max as well.

Have you tried a handful of well seeded torrents to see if you can max it out that way?
