[Need Info] DVD to avi or similar converter

Hey guys/gals.
I have some DVDs on my harddrive in .vob format. I would like to convert these to .avi format and save space.
What would you recommend?
Free would be best.

I use avi.NET which is free and works very well. Download and install everything in PAK1 and you should be set. Using the XviD codec and shooting for a file size of 700 MB or more for a 90 minute movie works very well for me.

Note: You must have the exact right version of the XviD codec installed for the program to run properly. The codec is included in PAK1 and you must uninstall any other version you may have installled and install the one included in PAK1.

Also, the .NET Framework 3.5 from Microsoft must be installed on your computer if Windows Update hasn't installed it already.

Requirements:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed on your PC (windows update).
A 32 bit (x86) version of Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.

You can try this Convert VOB to AVI. It's freeware. It should be suitable for you. You can use it to convert to AVI DivX if you want to get smaller file size with the same video quality. You can find description about the program here: »www.convertvobtoavi.com/ and from there you can find a download link.

I prefer AutoGK. Completely free, does a great job, and I can batch process movies overnight.

I use this: »alltoavi.sourceforge.net/

I've converted .MKV's to avi's that way, and it works great.

It does handle your .VOB format too.

.avi video format is crap. Take my word for it. SD-DVD video uses the MPEG-2 up to 9.8Mbps @ 30fps. So if your going to encode your SD-DVD's I would use the the MPEG-2 format.

avi is a container, which can use any number of codecs, some of which yield far better results than mpeg-2.
