| vista64 bit and constant wireless problems
First some history: »Trendnet "n" card, trendnet router and no connect Vista 64 OK I pulled the Trendnet card and got a Sabrent USB2 wireless adapter for this box. When first installed it was a struggle to get it connected to the wireless network. Eventually it went live and I got to the internet. Then a short time later it just went out and couldn't reconnect... Haven't got it to work since except sporadically. Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, this time w/ the utility so I could see what was going on. The dumb thing stared going through a cycling process where it would connect to the network, eventually connect to the internet, then completely disappear then start the above all over again. Think I should just try a network bridge. This is getting ridiculous.... any suggestions ???? Oh and why does it always ask to be plugged into a high speed USB port when all ports are usb2? I know sometimes the port will slow down if non-high speed are plugged in but I did attempt to isolate non from high speed. May have failed though. I moved the thing from front pots, to back ports, to another bank of ports on the front. same message. |

| From the symptoms in your threads, you seem to be experiencing crappy drivers. The "right" answer is to get the manufacturers to work on them, work with Microsoft or work with a witch doctor to fix them. Your idea of using a bridge is a wise one, though. That would free you from the silliness you're dealing with now. The only driver involved would be the one for the wired NIC and those are very mature.
You'll probably spend some bucks for an "N" bridge, but it might be worth stopping the hair loss. |

| Don't really need "n" right now so I just bought a OTC 802.11g Wireless LAN Bridge off ebay. Still throwing money down the Vista64 hole (though a lot cheaper than N).... We shall see how this works...should have just run a cable |

| I'm giving up......
Bought a OTC 201-g bridge off ebay but I can't get that thing to work. Probably the reason is it seems to have old firmware. You can update in the interface BUT I can't find any...... Seems this company has been bought and now is a german company but even so, firmware seems missing.. »www.otcwireless.com/ |

| final update
OTC thingy works fine (a bit of a challenge but Vista 64 is happy) One thing: Since OTC is defunct I was wondering if anyone had any firmware updates laying around? The company went belly up and the german firm that bought them hasn't a clue as to where the firmware is. Driver download ect. doesn't have anything either. Long shot but the manual (which you can get) had a screen capture w/ newer firmware shown. I think the one I bought was "new old stock" and has orig. firmware...... |

| Truth be told, that is, UNfortunately, what happens all too often when you buy based on price. For routers and bridges, I do my own due-diligence as far as compatibility goes (including asking mucho questiones on fora like the one here); that is one BIG reason I prefer Linksys wireless routers (especially G and N) - in normal usage, they are darn-near bulletproof, the setup is also a breeze, and the cross-brand compatibility is the best of *any* router company (and that was *before* they were acquired by Cisco Systems). |

4 edits | a few comments: Most of the problems were not due to the trendnet router. It was a Vista driver/os problem w/ multiple wireless products. The Trendnet matching pci wireless card and router combo worked flawlessly for months. One day they didn't work. Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers was a mess and my only guess was an update to the 64bit OS led to a incompatibility issue between trendnet (who has feeble support for Vista) and Vista64. The Sabrent USB2 wireless n stick supposedly was quite Vista compatible but for some reason had problems but for a brief while it too was working but on reboot just refused to function correctly. The OTC appliance (which is YEARS old, 2003ish) and only "G" has excellent functionality w/ the Trendnet router and has been reported to me to be faster then the orig. trendnet card/router/vista64 combo. About the only thing taken out of the equation was the Vista driver dependence... IF parts work together they work together... That said I've run dlink, linksys, trendnet and netgear and a few even more oddball routers and had my fair share of compatibility successes and failures.. mostly successes in very mixed environments since I believe there are really only a few "chips" that all or most use...I am more of a "plug it in and it works" type guy. fighting w/ hardware is usually not my recommendation. If it works out of the box fine, if not take it back and try a different brand so I am not brand specific. As to linksys I've had good luck w/ most products and Cysco uber- switches used to be quite cheap on ebay (as in $1000 switch for $40 w/ a mtbf of like 2 generations ) I tried a Linksys PSUS4 print server/switch that as a switch was great but as a print server was not so great (no bidirectionality and limited printer choices). Probably not one of their better products though it was probably designed at a price point.. I can never recommend a brand since as tech changes and OS's get patched what worked one day may not work the next..... Edit: Buffalotech seemed to have to most stable and compatible wireless products. Too bad they were banned from selling them EDIT: Looks like Buffalo is back in the wireless biz.. got to research the whole story.... »www.buffalotech.com/products/wir···-hp-g54/ |
