| Earthlink EMail Problems
For the past week I have had problems reaching the pop.mindspring.com mail server. For a few hours each day (since September 23rd) I either get a time out error or server could not be contacted error. After a few hours this goes away.
I have been contacting ELM support every day and either I am told there is a problem and they are working on it or I am told there is not a problem and my machine is the problem.
I use Eudora for email. I find it interesting that I have absolutely no problems with the other two email accounts I run off this same install of Eudora. I also find it interesting that the errors only happen around noon each day. The morning and afternoon and night is just fine. It comes and goes.
This morning ELM announces they have major email problems. Has anyone else had these types of problems....or, am I the only one left using mindspring AKA earthlink.
I only use chat now because their phone customer support is just too difficult to understand because they do not speak English. |

@bellsouth.net | I can't connect either. Even the webmail appears to be down, and I can't log into My Account. I was wondering if it was just me. Anyone else? |

| reply to dlathem Yes, I have had on and off and on and off access to the pop server since last week. Apparently, whatever began last week has escalated to major failure. ELM tech folks spent too much time trying to convince folks like me it was my problem and not enough on troubleshooting the issue before this major failure occurred.
Even now, the ELM support site shows "No Known Issues" with email.
WHAT A JOKE! |

| reply to dlathem I was trying to get it to time out just now, but it's working, at least for me. It does take about 15 seconds to connect, however. If you have a mail client that lets you set server timeout and it's set to less than 30 seconds, you might want to set a longer timeout [say, 1 minute]. |

4 edits | reply to dlathem Now it's timing out.
Here's a screen grab.
FWIW, Windows 7 RC and Thunderbird 2.0.0.23.
It's just mail.mindspring.com. The earthlink.net servers are responding, or they're responding to earthlink.net logins.
What's even more intreresting is that you specify pop.mindspring.com whereas I'm using mail.mindspring.com. Those servers have completely different IPs. Off the top of my head, I'd guess one is in Atlanta and the other's in Pasadena.

mail.mindspring.com [207.69.189.28]

pop.mindspring.com [198.185.2.104]
ANOTHER EDIT: Not quite Pasadena and Atlanta. According to GeoBytes, pop.mindspring.com is in Marietta, GA and mail.mindspring.com is in... Birmingham, AL. |

@sbcglobal.net | reply to dlathem I have been seeing, for a week or so, slow to connect/authenticate on my PC (Linux, Seamonkey) less than 30s, but not timing out; many timeouts on my Treo @ ~30s. |

| reply to dlathem I have not had a problem with the pop.mindspring.com email server this morning. Usually the problem has begun by now. I am hoping this issue has been resolved.
I would say I am disappointed in how long it took ELM to address and then fix this issue, but this is what I expect now. Back in my Mindspring dial-up days and early DSL days there were very few problems and when they did come up they were fixed quickly.
I hope it sticks. |

| reply to dlathem Yes, I began to get time out errors about 30 minutes ago and I am now getting them every time I check mail.
Oh well.....I guess when I contact them about this I will be told my PC needs to be taken over so they can correct the settings on my computer. |

Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not work. I am using Thunderbird. In my case I only have a problem receiving emails, I have not problem sending them. This has been the case for about a week. I can still get my email using the "Web Mail" via my browser. |

| reply to dlathem Yes, sending email has never been an issue with me and Eudora either. Just checking mail between certain hours of the day. That is what is strange about it. When I get on the computer at about 6:45am there are no problems receiving mail. Usually about 11am to 12 noon I will begin to have problems with time outs and then long about 3 pm ..usually..the issue disappears. Do they need an additional air conditioner in the server room for the noon day heat or what? |
