@comcast.net | Westell 7500 DSL Modem
Fairport replaced dsl modem and now small office computers cannot talk to each other. Shared files are no longer shared. How do I correct this problem? |

| reply to Steve69 Check whatever software firewall you are running on the computers. You might need to mark the LAN as trusted (in your firewalls), before file sharing can work.
When your ISP replaced the DSL modem, then new one had a different MAC address. Many software firewalls check the MAC address of the router, and when they see it change the assume that the computer has been moved to a different network, and that the old rules about trusting the LAN no longer apply. -- AT&T dsl; Speedstream 5100b modem; Zyxel NBG334W router; openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.13 |

| The Westell firewall is turned off and so is XP's. I was told to hook up a Linksys router to the Westell. Let the Linksys do the routing. I put in PPPoE instead of DHCP. That did not work, the Linksys could not get internet connection. so I changed the PPPoE to DHCP on the Linksys router. I lost contact with the Linksys, but creating a broadband connection through IE I was able to get internet access and both computers were able to see each other. Then I lost DSL connection. Flashing light on modem, had to create a support ticket for DSL being down. Leave it to Fairpoint. . Is this the only way to do it to get the office computers to see each other and get internet access? Maybe the company should buy a different DSL router. I heard Westell modems were not very good or dependable. |

| Normally the modem would be doing the PPPoE, so setting the linksys for DHCP on its WAN side is correct unless you change the 7500 configuration.
The problem you will have with that setup, is that the 7500 wants to give out an IP of 192.168.1.* to the linksys. And thus the linksys would have a conflict since it wants to use the same range of IPs on its LAN side.
Best to reconfigure the linksys to use 192.168.2.1 for its LAN ip address. Then see if it works.
The flashing light on the modem might be a problem. But that depends on which light. If the DSL light is flashing, then you have lost sync and there may be a line problem. -- AT&T dsl; Speedstream 5100b modem; Zyxel NBG334W router; openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.13 |
