| reply to Nyteroad Re: What is going on
Nyteroad, I'm right down the road in Plainfield and last week and this weekend I did a LOT of complaining. Late Monday afternoon the noise/traffic on my line cleared right up. My modem's upstream has been about 7 dBmV less than last week and holds @ 47 consistently now. Check your modems upstream power, "192.168.100.1" and click on 'Signal'. I found under 52 dB your connection should be stable and @ the rated speed. 53 dB and more your mode is really shouting and your performance will reflect this. If this is the case then the problem is still in the lines. Metrocast's bandwidth isn't the problem because my speeds are very good now using this speed test: »speedtest.metrocast.net/ and I'm close to you in Plainfield. |

| reply to veloct Hey nyteroad, can you run a test at speedtest.ct.metrocast.net and compare the two when you are having problems? I see your levels are looking a little better. Just want to get an on-net / off-net comparison. -- Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today.

| reply to chess said by chess :well i dont have 10/1 up.... plus they are going to have to roll it out sooner than later.... people will start switching... they have to be competiive even if fios never comes down here.. if fios does come down they are in trouble Competitive with whom? Where I am in CT it's either Metrocast or AT&T DSL. I am lucky enough I can get their 6 mb profile, and would get maybe 5 mb on the DL. So there really isn't competition.
I will say that the techs here in the forum have worked with me via DSLR, the phone, and have been understanding and courteous. Sure when you compare a Metrocast to Comcast there is a big difference. Metrocast is not perfect, but they are doing upgrades and trying to get the system better up here at least. They use the same service so upgrades to us are upgrades to them also. -- "So, Lone Starr, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb."

It was real warm here today and the Upstream went to 53dB and now lots of packet loss. Have any techs here seen any issues with defects on the lines in the street that only show up when it's hot? The line from the street to my house is under ground so that shouldn't be effected to much.
I'm having a real hard time getting this to post now too. "2009-09-24 23:41:09 3-Critical R02.0 No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out " What's this? |

1 edit | reply to veloct So after a long night off losing my connection 6-8 times i finally called tech support and they are sending another Tech out to my house yet again .....of course i have to wait till tuesday for it. The tech said hes seeing an "interrupt" in my line what ever that may be and that the tech should be able to pin point it when he comes out. I asked him about my problem with really slow speeds since im paying for 10 to 1 and a tech has already come out to "fix" that. The Tech on the phone actually said to me and i quote "lets handle one problem at a time" what is that? i mean how do you run a company when you have people like that working for you. I figure now after paying $256 for an install having taken a half day last Tuesday to meet with the tech at my house and now im going to have to take another half day next Tuesday and the guy on the phone couldnt even give me a window of time the tech would be coming out to my house! told me they would call 30 mins before they show up well i work on a good day with no traffic 60 mins from my house so hows that gonna work! he told me to call customer service in the morning and they would figure it out.....metrocast owes me money.....gotta love paying 69.95 for a service that is non existent just to illustrate my point im finally back online for the few minutes im sure and here is what speed im currently running at.....talk about feeling like they are giving me a big middle finger.

| Nyteroad, I'm seeing the same problems and speeds you are but it is not constant. I have a service tech coming today. I'm going to show him this thread also. I'll post back here with the results of the visit. Guarantee the line doesn't act up while he is here, lol. There is definitely a problem in this area and I'm willing to bet Metrocast knows this but just can't/won't admit it because it's going to cost them $$ in refunds. Today is their last chance to do the right thing. If it isn't resolved or an honest explanation of what is wrong and what is the corrective action going forward; then I'm going online and ordering AT&T DSL 6meg/768k package for $35. Everyone else in my neighborhood has already switched. I'm the last hold out because I used to like Eastern CT. Cables tech support that has seemed to been let-go, quit, or reassigned. They use to patrol this forum and they were very good. Big business America. I guess it's the way it goes now. : |

| reply to veloct Yeah as much as i hate to limit myself to AT&T DSL if nothing changes as of Tuesday looks like im going to have to change also i rely on the web for about 50% of my job and cant have this acting up so much . I just talked to tech support again this guy seemed to know a bit more than the guy last night he pinpointed in that my upstream power level was to high currently at 55 db . He said that is what is causing the horrible speeds and disconnects. According to him the tech can just come out and mess around with the "filter" and that will fix it............Ya know Friday after work on my ride home i saw a metrocast truck on pine hill road and said to myself well there goes my internet and man i was right.
cooking today!

| reply to veloct Nyteroad I have also had problems over the 9 years I have had HSI from Eastern/Metrocast with high upstream power levels in the 50+ range. I am now at 45 let me tell you how I got there.
It would come and go, some times I think it was the weather, they came out a few times and looked at my line did I do not know what and it worked for 6 months or a year.
Let me state at this time I have a home run to my modem no splits as I do not have Video. But for the first few years I did have basic cable but I canceled that years ago. This fact will be important in a minute. BTW I never had connection troubles while I had video.
So Memorial day weekend this year on Thursday late at night my modem started going up and down and the levels where like yours in the 55 range. Hoping it had clear up I came home from work on Friday to a very distressed teenager that could not get on Face Book! Oh the horror! So I call in Friday at 4pm and with in 24 hours on a Long weekend a tech was at my front door.
He turns out to be a 19 year old kid my heart sunk I figured what does he know. But then I remember I was a 20 year old kid fixing copiers in offices in Dallas lets give him a break.
I am a geek so I told him I have a home run newer home 10 years old and return power of 55. He looks around and then goes up the pole and takes a look at what they call a tap and says that I still have a video/Internet one and well it is 10 years old and suspect. Me being the noisy type I am standing on the ground at the pole. So when he went back up with the new Internet only tap I went in rebooted the modem and the level was down to 45 and has been rock solid since.
I do not know if this is your problem but it was mine and I wish someone had changed the tap the first trip years ago. |

| reply to veloct Here is hoping that is the problem i like the service when it works. I was solid 9 to 1 for the first week but its been a nightmare ever since . I would love to know who you know at MC that they came out to your house the next day! i call and i have to wait 5 days before i even see a tech i guess that is one of my biggest problems...i understand they are busy doing the upgrade but your customers should come first for calls like this. |

| Update: Tech came out and of course Upstream power was holding steady at 49dBmV so no issues to witness. But a line test using his hand held analyzer failed. A line test out on the street and still a failure using his tool. He called a line-man with a bucket and the connection across the road at the tap passed. So early next week the line crossing the road to a pole on my property is going to replaced. He did replace the connections outside the house and at the pole on my property did manage to give me 2 dB @ 47dBmV upstream power. It has held all day and is now down to 45dB but it is also cool and dry out. I'll keep my fingers crossed and see what happens. I'll post back after the line is replaced also. |

| reply to veloct Nyteroad as far as who I knew, well that day it was just pure luck a spot opened up otherwise it would have been later in the week. I am hoping the spot opened for me because I talked to the tech on the phone in a nice manner and was able to talk to him at a tech level. I mean how many users are going to call in knowing their upstream level?
I will admit in the past when Odog was around we all knew some one |
