One might conclude that Metrocast is throttling customers during prime times????????????????? |

| reply to chess the problem is we/you share bandwidth with your neighbors... so most likely people are all surfing during these times...
IF you had DSL you have your own connection back to the central office and you dont see this delay at all
if they upgrade to docsis 3.0 you wont see as much bad speeds.... |

Sounds like they need to open the pipe up some more during the time people are home. I know they have fiber down here in SOMD but whatever. I wish i could get DSL. I would be happy with 3 megs. At least it would be consistent and not all over the place. |

1 edit | reply to N3CAL I doubt it is throttling. What you guys are seeing are very indicative of what we saw in January or so after the upgraded speeds. There were issues with the handoff between metrocast and the "interwebs" so to speak. After that was corrected, things were back to where they should be.
When you get the low speeds to speedtest.net post those along with a Metrocast speedtest. My guess would be that the speedtest.net tests will be much lower. That would show that the issue would lie on the handoff.
Here is the thread I was speaking about. »Issues tonight?

1 edit | reply to chess Well the tech just left. He said there's a leak somewhere. More people will be back later to try and fix it. He said as soon as he turn his equipment on it was picking up the leak from inside the truck(what ever that means).
He said depending on how bad it is, it might take a couple of days to trace the issue. But he thinks a line somewhere has a leak. To give it a couple of days and see if it still having issues.
And yes, i also believe there's somewhat of a hand of issue. Since sometimes i get max speed to the metrocast servers, but when i download or try speedtest.net i get terrible connection. The weird part, is that i don't think they have been working on the system down here as far as i know. |

| reply to chess Here in Maryland this issue happens every year for the last 5 years! The system was overloaded 5 years ago and it still is to this day. As more and more folks move down into this area the system gets overloaded (usually in the fall), it takes about 3-6 months for Metrocast to get the system upgraded and working to support the customer base and advertised speeds. Then it happens all over again!
Myself and many others in this area have no choice other than Metrocast. There is no other service. DSL is not available.
I pay for the gamers package but I only get the basic speeds for about half the day. Bottom line, I don't think that is fare and I don't get my moneys worth!

| reply to chess I can't comment specifically on other MetroCast systems outside of my own area but here in CT we are expecting to be switched to a super high capacity backbone uplink (10Gbit/sec) over the next few weeks. This will expand over the entire east coast and beyond. It's public knowledge so I think it's safe to talk about:
»investor.rcn.com/releasedetail.c···D=397902
My understanding is when this project is complete it will be a total of 20Gbit/sec uplink to the Internet. |
